Ministry mulls legal action against party intending to sell islands

Depok, West Java (Antara News) - Defense Minister Juwono Sudarsono said his ministry was considering to take legal action against the party that had put out an advertisement offering to sell two Indonesian islands in West Nusa Tenggara province.

"The advertisement (which appeared in an internet website recently) is false and illegal" and therefore had to be investigated and acted against, he said.

The website advertisement said the 13-hectare Panjang Island and 5-hectare Meriam Besar island near Teluk Santong village in Sumbawa, West Nusa Tenggara, were for sale.

Speaking to reporters after attending the observance of Research Day at the University of Indonesia here Wednesday, Juwono said his ministry would wait for the outcome of a ministerial meeting on political, legal and security affairs before investigating the case and decide the penalty to be imposed on the person or company that had issued the advertisement.

"We do not know whether our law provides for a sanction against such online advertising," he added.

Juwono said he would consult Law and Human Rights Minister Andi Mattalata on the legal action that could be taken in the case.

The website advertisement had also mentioned the natural attractivenes of the two islands.

On reports that a Singaporean national had become owner of Segayang Island in Riau Islands province, Juwono said he would investigate the reports.

"If we find any violations of the law, we will take action," he said. (*)
