RI`s plywood exports expected to increase next year

Nusa Dua, Bali (Antara News) - Indonesia`s wood panel exports are predicted to increase in 2008 as a result of a decline in raw materials in a number of competitor countries, an industry spokesman said here on Monday.

"The increasing volume of eco-friendly forest products Indonesia is turning out also helps to boost the competitive edge of Indonesian wood panel in the world market," Abbas Adhar, deputy chairman of the Indonesian Wood Panel Assocation, said on the sidelines of the on-going international conference on climate change here.

He said Indonesia`s wood panel exports were expected to increase to 2.5 million cu.m worth US$2 billion next year.

This year Indonesia`s wood panel exports were only expected to reach about 1.7 million cu.m, down from 2 million cu.m in the previous year.

Abbas Adhar said there were a number of reasons to expect an increase Indonesia`s wood panel exports next year, such as the declining of raw materials in competitor countries.

He said that raw timber in Malaysia and China had dropped significantly since Indonesia launched operations on illegal logging in the country. So far, the two countries were believed to be havens of Indonesia`s illegal logs so far.

"The operations have reduced supplies of illegal logs to China and Malaysia. As a result, they run short of raw materials," he said.(*)
