Indocomtech 2007 aiming for big sales

The Jakarta Post, Jakarta

Indocomtech 2007, the biggest computer exhibition to take place in Jakarta this year, opened Wednesday with the organizing committee saying it hoped to triple sales revenue compared with last year.

Over 300 participants are taking part in the expo, which runs from Nov. 14 through 18 and features a comprehensive range of hi-tech gadgets and gizmos, including computers, laptops, PDAs, computer software, printers and digital cameras.

The exhibition is expected to generate up to Rp 150 billion (around US$16.4 million) in total sales, as compared to Rp 50 billion last year.

"This is a reasonable target as the number of exhibitors has almost doubled compared with last year," said the chairman of the Indonesian Computer Industry Association (Apkomindo), Hidayat Tjokrodjojo.

Bambang Setiawan, general manager of the exhibition's promoter, said the increased number of participants had forced them to expand the exhibition area by 16,000 square meters, making it 60 percent bigger than last year.

"We hope the exhibition will attract overseas investors so that Indonesia becomes as well known for its IT skills as its natural resources," said Cahyana Ahmadjayuadi, director general of telematics at the Information and Communications Ministry.

About 90 percent of the exhibitors are members of Apkomindo, which has around 2,000 members from all across Indonesia. Apkomindo secretary-general Sutiono Gunadi said that the association was predicting sales of 1.8 million computers, 28 percent more than last year. (ind)
