Govt urges Indosat to hasten construction of fixed network

Jakarta (Antara News) - Director General of Post and Telecommunications Basuki Yusuf Iskandar has urged Indosat to step up the construction a CDMA fixed and local network in Indonesia in securing telephone subscribers of network.

Basuki made the remarks on the sidelines of a fast-breaking get together with executives of the Ministry of Communications and Information in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Basuki said he understood Indosat`s reasons of waiting for the completion of the CDMA frequency migration before promoting and marketing "Starone" more intensively.

On the same occasion, Indosat`s marketing director Guntur S Siboro said the migration of Starone frequency to Surabaya has been completed, and the migration to Jakarta is scheduled for completion in November

Right now, Indosat is also giving a compensation to Starone subscribers for being affected by the CDMA frequency.

"Some 2,000 of them had already applied for the compensation," Guntur said.

Earlier, PT Indosat Tbk reported the completion of the building of local fixed and long distance direct call networks throughout the country to the government, in this case the Indonesian Regulatory and Telecommunications Agency (BRTI).

Guntur said Indosat is now operating wireline and wireless networks in 24 cities in Indonesia, and those using the Indosat fixed network in those cities are Starone subscribers in Jabotabek (Jakarta, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi), Bogor, Surabaya, Malang, Pasuruan, Mojokerto, Denpasar, Medan, Banda Aceh, Pekanbaru, Batam, Palembang, Padang, and Bukittinggi.

Starone also operates in Bandar Lampung, Balikpapan, Banjarmasin, Makassar, Semarang, Solo, Yogya, Salatiga, Pontianak and Bandung.

Guntur meanwhile admitted that Indosat has not been promoting Starone too intensively, as it is still awaiting the completion of the the Starone frequency migration from 1900 Mhz to 800 Mhz scheduled for completion in November 2007.

On a different occasion, chief spokesperson for PT Indosat Adita Irawati said Indosat has fulfilled its commitment to build a telecommunications fixed network in Indonesia.(*)
