Does anyone remember this post a few months back about governmental control of the Internet and blogs?
http://www.jakchat.com/forums/ubbthreads.php/ubb/showflat/Number/47499#Post47499

Combine that with the current move by some government and blogging people to create an "ethics committee" and a "positive blogging atmosphere" which now seems to be the main things to be discussed at this Pesta Blogger 2007 later this month -- wherein the Minister of Information/Communication will be a key participant and non-Indonesians are not allowed to participate.

Below are comments from a couple of Jakarta-based bloggers on the Pesta Blog and its agenda to both stifle creativity and separate people by the color of their passports:

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Jakarta-based foreign resident blogger:
What worries me a lot more is the notion of 'control' being bandied around.

From the Post:
1. Billed as the "New Voice of Indonesia", bloggers would discuss ways of creating a positive blogging atmosphere in Indonesia. "But still, bloggers should write in appropriate way. We should avoid defaming people," Budi Putra, who runs gadget blog budiputra.com, said.

2. There are ongoing discussions of whether a "blog ethics committee" is necessary to create standards. To anticipate legal problems, Budi suggested bloggers participating in Pesta Blogger 2007 discuss whether they need to establish a legal aid institute similar to media associations.

"Create a positive blogging atmosphere, a blog ethics committee, establish a legal aid institute" .... WTF?

And whose "standards""And who do you think would 'staff' and control all this? Why, none other than those wishing to impose their spins ~ PR merchants such as Unspun and WW, and so-called "professional" bloggers such as Budi P.

From the same Post article: "The success story of OhmyNews of South Korean with its motto "citizen is a reporter" has become an exemplary model of how internet media can compete with traditional media."

"Every citizen is a reporter"? Not if there are control mechanisms and a so-called ethics committee!

Now that Indonesians are gradually entering the global village envisaged by Marshall McLuhan, it is almost a tragedy that certain individuals remain rooted in the mindset created by the Dutch colonialists and continued up to the end of the Suharto era. ([one of the key organisers] is a Malaysian with a mindset presumably nurtured by the British colonialists and the Mahatir regime.) In that he was Gus Dur's presidential spokesman, it is strangely incongruous that Wimar Witoelar should be part of this PB group. It was during Gus Dur's short-lived presidency, which followed the even shorter reign of Habibie, that the printed media first flexed its muscles.

Prior to that, those writers and journalists who could not be bought off were considered to be as dangerous as terrorists, and were jailed, beaten or killed. And this is a scenario that to some extent continues today. "The pen is mightier than a sword" indeed, something to be feared.

There are enough natural and manmade disasters (cf. Jakarta floods, Aceh tsunami, Yogya earthquake) we could together focus on to be a positive force. As Marek has pointed out, his SMS messengering system beat the TVs with the news of the recent Bengkulu earthquake, and Jakartass beat the printed media. This is 'citizen power we have, but seemingly not for discussion at PB.

What do the Pesta Blogger folk fear? That we might upset their paymasters/sponsors?

..........................................

An overseas Indonesian says this:
Regarding the ongoing discussion abt that Blog Ethics Committee, I think it's one of the gravest thing that any pro-democracy bloggers could ever fear of. If such a "legal aid institute" truly gets established, I think it violates the recently approved constitution abt that press freedom thingy.

Moreover, where is our country Indonesia heading? Towards a 50-50 communist-democratic country like China? In China, they not only impose strict regulations toward those who blog against the govt, they even ban sites like Wikipedia!

I concur that a personal responsibility is necessary in blogging as a new form of citizen journalism. However, such a responsibility should be self-imposed by the bloggers themselves, NOT by any dictatorial institutions like that Blog Ethics Committee…

They just love their committees here don't they? A new liberating technology comes along which could do a lot to undermine the corrupt culture of patronage, intimidation and censorship in RI and help liberate a new generation from the yoke of genuflecting new order emasculation and what's the local bloggers big inspiring idea? More centralized censorship.Well done. What stunning breadth of imagination these dismal privileged, besuited local upper class bloggers have; what amazing powers of political perception and acuity. I hope their blog fest is the dismal, corporate-schilling-whore ridden failure that it deserves to be.

I'm considering animating it with the obvious Happy Ending but I'd better not!

Oh, you mean this one?

Yup, thats the one...wonder what she would look like with a Pearl necklace?

I do wish you or KuKu would delete these sort of things immediately. I believe she's on the steering committee for this upcoming Pesta Frigger. And she has a blog about porridge, which seems to be down at present.

shall we all go for a laugh? Only 200k. We could all get a bit tasty after a few beers and go windmilling into them. Ken can fly over for the week.

Sure you might be able to bribe your way in with some lessons in witty writing, but your disguise doesn't fool anyone.

Not a wagon, but a spaceship. And rocks have been lifted, while sheeps are still preparing for the Koran recital contest prior to their voyage to Arab Saudi.

Anybody know where we can rent a penguin costume. I might be up for making a donation to have kuku turn up dressed as a penguin.

Costume rentals in Jakarta not easy to find online:

Old post from 2004 on dunia-ibu.com lists a fascinating range of costumes available (banci, aa gym, preman, ghost, alien, convict, sexy nurse!!!, school uniforms, etc and special costumes to order). But where? somewhere in Kemang?
http://www.dunia-ibu.org/sharing/index.php?id=464

And a different site more recently (March 2007) recommends a place in Bintaro:
sewa kostumnya di jl. mandar 19, DF5 No. 4 Bintaro Jaya 3A. Telp. 08158063621

But I'll have to concur with Capt. Mainwaring, Kuku can just don the white shirt, black trousers, black tail-coat and bowtie, carry a bucket of rancid lele and practise his waddle.
