Jakarta to foster investment cooperation with New South Wales

Jakarta (Antara News) - The Jakarta administration was expected to foster investment and trade cooperation with Australia`s state of New South Wales in the framework of sister city cooperation, Jakarta Deputy Vice Governor Fauzi Bowo said here Monday.

The two sides are interested in enhancing cooperation in several sectors including handicraft trade, investment in power plant projects with waste-processing technology, and investment in liquid waste management, Fauzi said after meeting with members of the Australia-Indonesia Trade Committee.

"Another sector which can be developed by investment is radiation technology for healthcare. This investment has a good prospect in Jakarta which is developing as a healthcare service centre of national and regional scale," he said.

Welly Salim, a member of the Australia-Indonesia Business Council (AIBC), said the visit of his group to the Jakarta administration was to offer a donation to the Jakarta city administration to overcome the problem of securing clean water supply.

Welly said his group offered a number of clean water processing facilities for densely populated areas, locations close to industrial complexes, and those still without clean water networks.

"Our visit is to ask for inputs from the Jakarta administration about locations suitable for clean water processing sites," he said.

Such facilities have been applied in Yogyakarta`s districts of Wonosari, Sleman and Gunung Kidul. AIBC has also provided similar facilities to the Acehnese people when a tsunami hit Aceh in 2004. With a skyhydrant device, the people can always drink clean water as the sanitation is guaranteed, he said.

On efforts to improve the investment climate in Jakarta, Fauzi Bowo said the Jakarta administration has studied a number of "retribusi" (fees for using public facilties) which were considered not competitive and hampered investment in the capital city.

However, he was not available to brief on what kind of "retribusi" the Jakarta administration is studying.(*)
