Australia extends loan to Indonesia to rebuild roads

Sydney (Antara News) - Australia will extend a 300 million AUD (close to 252 million
USD) interest-free loan to Indonesia to help rebuild roads destroyed by the 2004 tsunami.

Australian Foreign Minister Alexander Downer said that the loan was part of the 1 billion AUD Australia-Indonesia Partnership for Reconstruction and Development Programme.

The funding will support the upgrade of 1,000km of roads and about 4.5 km of bridges, mainly in Indonesia's eastern region.

A 28 million AUD (23.5 million USD) grant for planning and design would accompany the loan, Downer was quoted by VNA as saying in a statement.

Major works are due to begin in South Sulawesi and South Kalimantan in the first half of next year. (*)
