H1 Tourist Arrivals Up 12.2% Yr-on-Yr

The number of foreign tourists who visited Indonesia in the first half of the year was up 12.2% compared to the same period last year, a Tourism Department official said.

Some 2,143,000 foreign tourists visited the country from January to June, compared to 1,909,600 in the same time last year, the departmentís marketing director, Thamrin B Bachri, was quoted as saying by Antara.

Last June, 411,200 foreign tourists arrived in the country, topping the figures for the same month in the past three years, he said.

With the increase in tourist arrivals in the first half, Bachri said there is reason for the government to be optimistic that it would achieve its target of attracting 6 million foreign tourists this year. Indonesia hopes to earn $5.4 billion from its visitors.
