Regional authorities must ensure survival of traditional mkts, Yudhoyono says

Jakarta (Antara News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said regional administrations should make spatial allocations for modern and traditional markets in their respective jurisdictions that will ensure the latter`s survival.

"Governors, district heads and mayors should determine proper locations for modern and traditional markets," the head of state said when delivering the government`s explanations on its policies on regional development to a plenary session of the Regional Representatives Council (DPD) at the parliament building here on Thursday.

The President made statement in response to DPD Chairman Ginandjar Kartasasmita`s complaint about the disappearance of traditional markets.

"We discovered the phenomenon (of disappearing traditional markets) when we visited some regions," Ginandjar said.

Ginandjar said the demise of traditional markets could affect the people`s economic autonomy as traditional markets could play an important role in the eradication of poverty and unemployment.

Yudhoyono also said he agreed with Ginandjar`s suggestion that the government should support development of domestic industries by continually promoting Indonesian-made products everywhere.

The President said he had told state enterprise executives and businessmen to maintain the quality of their merchandise and offer their goods to the public at economical prices.

"It would be good if we stage wider campaigns to use national products," the President told the DPD plenary session.

Yudhoyono and First Lady Ani Yudhoyono, Vice President Jusuf Kalla and Mrs Mufidah Kalla as well as cabinet ministers, DPD members and other invitees at the DPD plenary session all wore traditional batik clothing. (*)
