Rising tension in Aceh after bombings

Banda Aceh, 31 July (AKI) - A spate of bombings in Aceh this year has raised fresh concern about political instability in the Indonesian province.

The latest bomb exploded on Sunday outside the office of the district's assistant chief in the district of Bireuen causing widespread damage. No one was killed or injured in the incident but experts are concerned about the increasing violence.

"I don't think there is one singular explanation for these bombings," southeast Asian director of the International Crisis Group, John Virgoe, told Adnkronos International (AKI).

"I believe there may be political reasons as well as economic reasons."

Nurul Kamal, deputy coordinator of the local Aceh Institute, said it was difficult to imagine who was behind the explosions.

"One cannot say for sure who is behind them, they are acting in groups and in areas where conflict was particularly violent," he told AKI.

"These bombs put the peace process at risk and test the nerves of local people, still shaken by the war."

Aceh was torn by a 30-year secessionist war between the Free Aceh Movement (GAM) and the Indonesian government until GAM and Jakarta endorsed a peace deal in August 2005.

GAM members assumed control of most of the political positions in local elections held last December.

One of the bombs that exploded recently was targeted at the home of Sofyan Dawood, former spokesman for GAM.

Ahh yea, there is, the GAM is now KPA; the KPA is heavily factionalised and the KPA is now bullying every elected official who doesn't cough up with the required 'gratuities' expected of them (even of they are ex-GAM)..hence you get your ass grenaded....and it's gonna get a lot worse..
