Oil palm firms urged not to burn forests to clear land

Muara Teweh, C Kalimantan (Antara News) - Central Kalimantan Governor Agustin Teras Narang called on palm oil companies in North Barito (Barut) district not to burn forests in opening up land.

In opening up land for the cultivation of oil palm , investors should work based on a planned and well-organized land cultivation without resorting to burning forests.

"I hope that investors opening up land for oil palm cultivation wILL not burn forests, land and other fields," the governor said during the 57th anniversary celebrations of Barut here on Tuesday.

Forest fires have been blamed for annual haze that disturb neighboring countries such as Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand.

Most of the forest fires come from Kalimtan and Sumatra.(*)
