From my previous posting many of you will be aware that I know enough about computing to get myself into trouble but not enough to get myself out of trouble. In particular I was really p'd off with M/S Vista.

Well, I'm still not impressed with Vista but, after a visit from a couple of computer literate relatives yesterday, I'm much happier.

The Vista installed on my laptop has now been stripped of all unnecessary ye candy". It's down to what it should be ... a basic operating system. Speed has doubled. Dropouts (so far) are non existent.

What's more the pre-installed trial version of McAfee has successfully been uninstalled and replaced with AVG. Did you know that Windows uninstaller will not completely remove anti virus software. The only way to fully remove McAfee and other similar anti virus programs is to use their own uninstaller ?

Also, my home network is fully operational and data can now be moved between computers without having to resort to burning to a DVD and physically moving that between computers.

Am I happy ? You bet I am !

I tried Vista in China on a computer that was installed in my "Suite".

Apart from the fact that all characters were in Chinese, even running simple shit took ages.

Problem was it was not my computer, I could not uninstall anything and the history thingy in IE was full of links to Chinese Porn!

I think I'll wait for a while before movingfrom XP!

I installed AVG on the advice of a work friend - what a load of shite it turned out to be - it decided the about 30 .msi files were infested , and attempted to delete them without any prompt . To test it I copied an .msi file from a clean OEM CD , and it thought that had a virus too -

I always set my PC's up from scratch with all necessary software , and directly make a ghost image of the partition - I create data directories on a partition for outlook and working documents , and if for any reason I get virus trouble I can restore the operating system in 10 minutes , licenses and all .

In all probability the PC that Dilli encountered had a cracked edition of vista or was virused up already - vista is also not really ideal for PC's with less than 2 gig of RAM or slow single core processors .

The problem with Vista is serious incompatibility with other software. Alright if all you do is basic stuff like word processing, spreadhseets etc, but nearly all the applications I use for development work do not work under Vista.

Think, like you Dilli, I will stick with XP Pro for a bit longer!!
