Govt to revitalize strategic industries

Jakarta (Antara News) - The government will soon revitalize state firms engaged in strategic industries, including aircraft maker PT Dirgantara Indonesia (DI).

"I think the country is now able to revitalize state firms engaged in strategic industries," State Enterprises Minister Sofyan Djalil said here on Tuesday.

If managed well, the strategic industries could brighten the prospects of the national economy and increase state revenues, he said.

Djalil said he had discussed the planned ravitalization of strategic industries with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and former president BJ Habibie.

"I met the President and Pak Habibie yesterday. We will look into the possibility of revitalizing PT DI, PT Pal (shipbuilder), and PT Pindad (arms industry)," he said.

Early this week, President Yudhoyono met with Habibie to discuss the planned revitalization of strategic industries.

The planned revitalization is expected to affect state aircraft industry and dockyard company.

Habibie himself was formerly president director of the two state firms.

During the meeting, Habibie suggested that PT DI redesign its N-250 aircraft to make it less fuel-consuming.(*)
