I try hard not to believe the typical stereotypes... such as Asians can't drive, Jews are cheap, Russian women are whores, British have bad teeth, the French are pansies..., etc etc...

The one that I try hard to ignore, but often stares me in the face is 'Americans are arrogant'.

Just take a look at the postings of our own friendly American... Riccardo.

Two quotes that I read from him but for some reason can't get out of my head are:

1. Sorry I can't find the original, but he stated: "I distinctly remember every single thing I have ever read." - I think xsbir had a go at him for this one, but I can't find the posting.

And 2., in Kuku's Laser Eye posting:
Quoting: riccardo
Good vision isn't all it's cracked up to be. Most of my life, I've had 20-12 vision in one eye and 20-08 in the other. Don't know what that is in terms your guys' numbering system [probably something like +2.0 or +2.5], but it puts me in the top 1% of the global human population. I can see the seams of a 90mph baseball pitch and determine the direction it's spinning before deciding if it's a curveball that will drop left or right. (That and a dollar gets me a cup of coffee).

Anyone got any others?
Sorry Riccardo, but I just can't get over your ego sometimes... it seems you don't have a concept or use of the term 'modesty'.

I think you just stepped into this one. Do you understand the saying "that and a dollar gets me a cup of coffee"? IT MEANS something is worthless! I was saying that my good eyesight is worthless! No value whatsoever, no contribution to the quality of my life -- worthless. SO...If that's your definition of "arrogant" I think you need to open a dictionary. I'm sure you could hunt around this site, spend half a day and find many properly arrogant quotes from me. And truly, that sounds like a lot more fun than anything else you have planned for the next couple weeks.

Well Roy , let's hope so , at least it would be a good deal more entertaining than the parable or should that be parabole of "Larry , Sam and Trudi" that was yesterday's thought for the day .

I must say I have often wondered at Riccardo's raison d'Ítre -

you know, this whole american thing is getting way out of hand. we non-americans should be bloody-well grateful that there exists on this planet a nation that can be the butt of all our jokes, and a people whom we can feel superior to.

truly, if we didn't have the americans to whip, we'd have to invent them.

but then, if we didn't have the americans, we'd still have the french. everybody hates the french. and everyone *loves* hating the french. this is what makes the french so useful.

so i say, thank god for the americans; they make the rest of us look good by comparison!

The septic tanks have an identity problem I think. They keep calling people who actually are American ,"Unamerican". it's very confusing.

Indeed. Any of you guys remember this:

The House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) was created in 1938 to investigate alleged disloyalty and subversive activities on the part of private citizens, public employees, and those organizations suspected of having Communist ties.

You still felt that you had to mention that your eyesight is better than 99% of the world's population... and so what? who cares?

And you mention how you 'distinctly' remember everything you've ever read. Again, so what? I see this talent has improved your quality of life so much... has given you the best jobs, has kept you from getting fired, you live in the best possible location on this planet, etc, etc...

You could have the best (insert talent here) on the planet, and if you don't use it or do anything with it, it's a fucking waste.

If you are so proud of your talents, then make proper use of them, but don't bother to brag about them.

I also wonder why, out of every regular poster on this board, we only know your uniqueness?

I know some of the other's interests from their postings, but not a single other poster here bothers to write that they are 'the best at this', or 'top 1% of that', etc...

I have to attribute said qualities to simple immature arrogance... just like a school boy who needs to brag to his friends... pathetic.

hmm -- I don't think Riccardo is arrogant, just very opinionated. My read on him is that he likes to take a radical view of things as it gives him the sense that he is "fighting the system". Having met Riccardo I can tell you he didn't come across as arrogant and is in fact highly intelligent.

And this is coming from somebody who almost never agrees with him

haha.. luv this topic, i don't think american is arrogant. There's something about the culture that makes 'em so confident. I even notice they made the idea of 'America' like sort of achievement. So confident they can sell anything to the other part of the world, from Mcdonald to even useless paris hilton.. ah and have bush as a leader. How fucked up is that. Ah well.. lets not make poor american citizen to blame

There's something about the culture that makes 'em so confident- yes , the majority are so thick that those that can stand up unaided get quite cocky . I even notice they made the idea of 'America' like sort of achievement.
