"Grown men should not be having sex with prostitutes unless they are married to them."
-- Jerry Falwell, on CNN's Crossfire, May 17, 1997

sounds reasonable to me.

I posted this a while back:

From the BBC, yonks ago:

The innocent world of the Teletubbies is under attack from America's religious right.

The Reverend Jerry Falwell, a former spokesman for America's Moral Majority, has denounced the BBC TV children's show. He says it does not provide a good role model for children because Tinky Winky is gay.

Cheerful Tinky Winky, the purple character with the triangular aerial on his head, carries a handbag - but apart from that seems much the same as his friends Laa-Laa, Dipsy and Po.

The characters are famous for their use of baby language, including the catchphrases "eh-oh" meaning "hello", and "uh-oh" for "oh dear".

But the Teletubbies have made the Rev Falwell, chancellor of Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia, hot under the collar. He decided to "out" Tinky Winky in the February edition of his National Liberty Journal.

'Subtle depictions'

In an article called Parents Alert: Tinky Winky Comes Out of the Closet, he says: "He is purple - the gay-pride colour; and his antenna is shaped like a triangle - the gay-pride symbol."

He said the "subtle depictions" of gay sexuality are intentional and later issued a statement that read: "As a Christian I feel that role modelling the gay lifestyle is damaging to the moral lives of children."

In the same article he also condemned the US animated show South Park as "vile and impudent".

The Teletubbies, aimed at pre-school children, is immensely popular in the UK and around the world.

The show was first broadcast on US public TV last spring where it is now as popular as another children's show, Barney, a singing dinosaur. But perhaps parents should beware of Barney as well - he also happens to be purple.

'Absurd and offensive'

The Teletubbies are portrayed by actors in oversized, brightly coloured costumes. They all have television screens on their tummies and, according to the story line, live in a "chromedome" hidden in the hills.

Steve Rice, a spokesman for Itsy Bitsy Entertainment, which licenses the Teletubbies in the US, said : "The fact that he carries a magic bag doesn't make him gay.

"It's a children's show, folks. To think we would be putting sexual innuendo in a children's show is kind of outlandish.

"To out a Teletubby in a pre-school show is kind of sad on his part. I really find it absurd and kind of offensive."

A BBC spokeswoman said: "This is not the first time that people have read symbolism into a children's TV programme and it probably won't be the last.

"As far as we are concerned Tinky Winky is simply a sweet, technological baby with a magic bag."

Does this mean that Mr Bush will invade Teletubbie land?

Tinky Winky and Dilli have common ground then , both having "magic bags".

Poland investigates the Teletubbies

The World Today - Tuesday, 29 May , 2007 12:46:00
Reporter: Nicola Fell

ELEANOR HALL: In Poland, the spokeswoman for children's rights is considering banning the popular British television show The Teletubbies.

The Polish official has ordered psychologists to investigate whether the television program, which is popular among toddlers worldwide, encourages homosexuality.

Ewa Sowinska has singled out the purple character Tinky Winky as suspicious, saying he has very girly taste when it comes to his fashion accessories.

But the European Union has criticised the Polish Government, which it says has taken a series of homophobic actions, as Nicola Fell reports.

(Teletubbies speaking on television program)

NICOLA FELL: Tinky Winky may soon not be laughing like that when he finds out he might be banned in Poland.

This luminous-purple, furry figure with an aerial in his head and a television set in his belly has upset the Polish spokeswoman for children's rights.

Ewa Sowinska is concerned that while Tinky Winky has a low voice he also often sports a very glitzy handbag. She thinks he might be promoting a homosexual lifestyle to his young viewers.

Ghassan Kassisieh from the Gay and Lesbian Rights Lobby says as ridiculous as it sounds concerns about Winnie the Pooh's lifestyle and Noddy's all male group of friends have been voiced before.

GHASSAN KASSISIEH: Well, what we can say for Tinky Winky? I think he should keep his purse at home. No, but really it, it just shows that absolute - first of all it's a complete overreaction, but also it underlies a homophobic preconception about children being converted or recruited to the homosexual lifestyle, which is an absolute myth.

NICOLA FELL: Nonetheless Ms Sowinska wants psychologists to investigate whether Teletubbies should be broadcast on public television. She said Poland needed to examine if inappropriate attitudes were being promoted, and if so, take action.

Leslie Holmes from the Contemporary Europe Research Centre at Melbourne University says the European Union has often criticised Polish Government policy towards homosexuals, in particular the recent announcement by the Polish Education Minister of plans to sack teachers who promote homosexuality.

LESLIE HOLMES: Homophobia is not acceptable within the EU. It's a human rights issue. And it's just one of many things that Poland has been criticised for by the EU in recent times - xenophobia is another one, hostility towards foreigners. It's an interesting political situation. You've got twin brothers running the country, the Kaczynski twins - Lech is the president and Jaroslaw is the prime minister. And their party, Law and Justice, is dominant party in the Government.

NICOLA FELL: And what characterises their party?

LESLIE HOLMES: Right wing, conservative, rather traditional and they are certainly very anti-communist.

NICOLA FELL: Ms Sowinska has been pressurised to backtrack a little, insisting that she did not believe the Teletubbies were really a threat to the nation's children. But the evaluation is still going ahead and her office can recommend that the show be taken off the air.

Leslie Holmes says these sentiments are also present in neighbouring Russia, which this weekend saw gay activists attacked while on a gay rights march.

LESLIE HOLMES: In both central and eastern Europe and in Russia both xenophobia and homophobia is growing. My experience and my own research would suggest that certainly in Poland it's still a minority viewpoint. Russia certainly has a problem at the moment with extreme right wing, I suppose we would call them skinheads - young males mostly who are very anti-gay and anti-foreigner. At moment they're still a minority but they're a very vocal minority.

ELEANOR HALL: That's Leslie Holmes from the Contemporary Europe Research Centre at Melbourne University speaking to Nicola Fells.

And for interested young viewers in Australia, the ABC, which broadcasts Teletubbies, says it has no plans to remove the program.
