President asks mass media to have self sensoring ability

Jakarta (Antara News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono had told the mass media to have a self sensoring ability in the presentation of a news report.

"Now is the time of the life of the press for this. Excessive control is now no longer appropriate. There are no longer all kinds of bans, including shutting down a newspaper which would only lead to counterproductive and unsound effects," he said when addressing the 8th year founding anniversary of Rakyat Merdeka paper in Jakarta on Friday night.

The president said that the government and the press were engaged in a `hate but longing` relationship.

"This relationship prevails in any country and nation, so that the government and the mass media are able to establish friendship for the development of democracy," he said.

The event was also attended by Madame Ani Yudhoyono, House of Representatives Speaker Agung Laksono, Jakarta Deputy Governor Fauzi Bowo, several cabinet ministers and politician Rachmawati Soekarnoputri, one of Indonesia`s first president`s daughters.(*)
