An email from a similarly disaffected colleague. Sigh.

3 METHODS OF PHILOSOPHY FOR MOTIVATING DONKEYS AT THE POINT

1. CARROT. This comes from the practice of dangling a carrot on a string in front of a donkey, the donkey moves forward, and so does the carrot, so the donkey moves more, and so on. This little trick works for a while, but eventually the donkey realizes that itís not going to reach the carrot and so it stops. So youíve got to let the donkey have some carrot occasionally -- but if you let it have too much carrot, then the donkey stops being hungry and stops working. Of course you could use juicer, tastier carrots -- but thatís just a temporary fix. Iím sure you can see the analogy with people and money etc.

2. STICK. OK the donkeyís full of carrots, but you still need it to pull the cart -- so you can beat it with a stick every time it stops. This will works for a while, but now youíve got a donkey that hates itís work and hates you), and eventually it will get used to the beating and not work any harder.

3. THE IMAGINARY INVESTOR. Once the donkey has become fed up with carrots and sticks, it's time to bring out the imaginary foreign investor Ė for example Jusuf Kalla's younger brother or an Indonesian tycoon living in Singapore and willing to throw his money down the drain. This kind of baloney can be used for months to keep the donkey pulling the cart, while never realizing his ultimate destination is the glue factory.

the only possible party wanting to own and english-language newspaper would be someone who wanted some sort of communications avenue into either the diplomatic community, or the foreign business community.

any newspaper with a readership of less than 100,000 these days is just a boutique vanity operation, or a propaganda machine. it is most definitely not a commercial operation; at least not in any direct sense.

One thing that I've noticed is that The Point's staff is seemingly taking their revenge by not being very thorough and letting dozens of typos get published... perhaps as a way to "stick it back to them." But the irony is that "they" (the paymasters) would never notice the grammar, syntax or punctuation mistakes, let alone care if it was pointed out them.

lets face it .... I love the idea of having a second paper to challenge JP but the only way it is going to get the funding it needs is to prostitute themselves to somebody with a political / business agenda who can throw them all the money they need in return for getting the type of coverage they want...... and then you have another JP

Obviously, TP does not know what to do with its money. With poor leadership and management and editors continuously bickering, TP is going down - facing sunk-cost problem. They had a good start in running the paper but ended up miserably, as they began mistreating good employees. There's no real meritocracy in their system. And that's that.

no meritocracy? of course not! it's an indonesian company! don't be silly! The Jakarta Post was/is just as bad. can you actually name one company in indonesia, foreign owned or otherwise, that is a meritocracy?
