Playboy editor gets screwed

The editor of Playboy magazine in Indonesia was found guilty for "violating moral norms" by publishing pornographic images and stories, while protesters called for him to be hanged.

More than 150 members of the "Indonesian People's Forum" and FPI said Erwin Arnada should die for his crimes, chanting "hang him, hang him," according to a Reuters report.

"He was found guilty for violating moral norm that spark people unrest," Prosecutor Resni Muchtar said, however, the Indonesian edition of Playboy did not feature any nudity and was not as risque as other magazines on sale in Indonesia.

Can anyone say: "HYPOCRISY"???
Most of these protesters who are so hot and bothered (and in fact most Asians) will argue that it is people from the WEST that are depraved and porn-crazy, but these statistics show us the true situation and the real perverts of the world.

Other Blurbs about Indonesian sex, Indonesian porn and other "marital aids".

Indonesia: (2006)
"The current market in VCD pornography is hard to quantify, and only a rough indication can be given of its possible size. Pornography is sold with a certain amount of discretion but relatively easily available at VCD stalls and at VCD rental shops, and most prominent in metropolitan centres. The most famous area in Indonesia to buy pornography is Glodok in Jakarta, where sellers openly tout their wares. In 2001 Tempo estimated the daily turnover in Glodok at about Rp. 1 billion (A$160000) with one VCD seller saying he would sell about 50 discs a day, 40 of which were porn."

Indonesia: (10/31/2006)
"During her period in power, as part of a larger global media trend, Indonesia too saw the rise of ‘infotainment’ as the preferred content of most newspapers, radio and television stations. Businessmen who knew little about the media business took to publishing soft porn magazines or tabloids featuring fledging actress wearing little more than a seductive expression on their faces. They did roaring business."

asiamediaforum.org

Indonesia: (4/19/2006)
"After a raid last week, during which the West Jakarta Police confiscated more than a million pornographic DVDs and VCDs worth Rp 1.5 billion (US$166,666), explicit films of sex acts continue to entice buyers to retail center Glodok. Despite some worries there will be more raids, hard-core porn DVDs are selling like hot cakes."

Indonesia: (4/4/2006)
''Pornography is available in the streets cheap. Five VCDs could be brought for 10,000 rupiah (little more than one US dollar) anyone can buy even children,'' .

asiamediaforum.org

Indoensia (Feb 2006)
"Indonesia already has a thriving black market in hardcore pornographic films, including bestiality titles, thanks to the support of corrupt police. Pirated hardcore pornography magazines are also available from certain street vendors. It’s quite easy for members of the nation’s 'young generation' to purchase such salacious films and magazines for no more than Rp5,000 a title. That makes them somewhat more accessible than Playboy Indonesia, which will sell for Rp50,000."

asiapundit.com

Indonesia: (1/26/2006)
"In the city's Glodok electronics center, pirated pornographic DVDs are often in plain view and the sellers yell out the movie names to passersby. Then there's the city's news tabloids, full of smutty stories, phone sex advertisements and -- more disturbingly -- lurid accounts of domestic abuse, incest, rape and murder. This trashy soft-core porn won't take the bulge out of your wallet, prices are as cheap as Rp 1,000 (around 10 US cents) a poster, while the DVDs, newspapers and magazines sell for a little more."

"The upscale girlie magazines are not cheap; both FHM and Matra sell for Rp 28,500 (about US$3) an issue. FHM managing editor Richard Sam Bera said his publication enjoyed good sales since making its debut in 2003, with monthly circulation from 60,000 to 75,000 copies nationwide."

He hasn't been convicted yet, he will be of course, but not for a few weeks yet. Somebody got an oddly written JP story confused.

Ya, that seemed weird, now I know why. Maybe it was a funny translation of the prosecutor's words, which should have read something like, "we believe he must be found guilty..."

Extreme hypocrisy when you consider the FPI have made a career of attacking only those 'vice' establishments that don't shell out to the TNI. Read Kevin O'Rourke's 'Reformasi' for more details.

Fully agree on their hypocrisy. BUT it's not some big secret that O'rourke "reveals" about their connections to the security forces and extortion techniques... everybody knows it, from the greenest noob tourist to SBY himself.

Stands to reason since most porn bar the softest, most pixellated movies and magazines are banned. I'm a libertarian of sorts who believes that prohibition of things that should be in the domain of individual choice inevitably leads to black market demand for such things. However, pointing this out to most Koreans, nay, most Asians is pointless as there is little or no liberal tradition in most countries. Moreover, most citizens believe in a strong role for the state vis-a-vis moral issues.

With regards to the FPI and their TNI connection, I agree its not a secret. However, other forums I've posted on in the past don't have the connection with Indonesia and I've heard people call them all kinds of things like an offshoot of JI. I think its important to realize where they come from and that they aren't part of the JI/Darul Islam/Ngruki Pesantren nexis.

PS. Riccardo, I stayed up and watched the Richard Dawkins documentary 'Root of all Evil' last night. Have you seen it? What do you make of his conclusions?

We'll keep this thread on-topic for now, but later I'll do a post dedicated to Dawkins. In brief, I didn't know there was a documentary, but I've read his books "The God Delusion" and "the Selfish Gene" (many moons ago). He should have stuck to his science. He's become everything he despises, a dogmatic evangelical fundamentalist, except he does it for the cause of his "neo-Pop Atheism." Now he just looks like a kooky nerd with an ax to grind, pimping that tired cliche "religions are the cause of all wars/problems..." to whip up controversy and sell some books to the Lowest Common Denominator.

Anyway, we can do Dawkins later.....

------
Back to this PORN topic, one thing that I didn't put up is that the US, Brazil, Spain and Holland are the leading producers (supply side) of porn and Asians/Muslims are the leading consumers (demand side). Thought that was interesting.

Not only that, but Canada's Ambassador to Indonesia is none other than the greatest porn star who ever lived, John Holmes!

Not necessarily. The original post was on the global porn stats and Playboy, clearly showing that Asians love their porn more than anyone else and Muslims search the Internet for porn more than anyone else.

But as I was reading The Point they had a photo of Ambassador Holmes with a very subtle reference to his namesake... In fact, the boys at THE POINT seem to refer to Ambassador Holmes about once a week, regardless of any newsworthiness. Hmmmm...

I lived and worked in South Korea for 4 years and agree with what was written about Koreans and sex / pornography.

In many cases a couple stay faithful to each other for only a few years after marriage. Then the man and often the woman find boyfriends or girlfriends. Divorce is frowned upon but infidelity, provided it is not too blatant, is ignored. Perhaps this is because many marriages are still arranged - but this is changing, albeit slowly.

'Room Salons' pretend to be drinking and socialising places but in reality are high priced brothels. Some public bath houses are above board but many are just fronts for lower priced brothels.

I was pressured by a Korean university professor into going to a bath house. When I refused to enter the building he became very irate and accused me of spoiling his whole evening. Until then I had thought he was my friend. He knew I was married but he just could not understand that I was faithful to my wife.

South Korea is basically a Confucian society but many Koreans can be very hypocritical.

Am I correct in my belief that similar ambiguities exist in Indonesia? Your comments would be appreciated.
