New Zealand Beats Australia to Sweep One-Day Cricket Series 3-0

By Ryan Mills

Feb. 20 (Bloomberg) -- New Zealand condemned Australia to a fifth straight loss in one-day cricket for the first time in a decade to sweep their three-match series less than a month before the World Cup gets under way.

The Black Caps made the second-highest successful run chase to pass the world champion's total of 346-5 in Hamilton and win by one wicket even after Australia batsman Matthew Hayden made a team-record 181 runs -- part of it with a fractured toe. The host, boosted by Craig McMillan's 117 and 86 not out from Brendan McCullum, reached 350-9 with three balls to spare.

``It was a hell of a chase,'' McCullum told Sky Sports. ``It was out of this world; one hell of a game.''

The Australians, aiming to win a third straight World Cup in the West Indies, lost their No. 1 ranking to South Africa two days ago after going 2-0 down in the series.

Australia had previously lost 2-0 to England in the final of a tournament also featuring the Kiwis.

The Aussies are running scared. "We didn't even want to play." What a wanker.

'We didn't want New Zealand tour' - Gilchrist

Cricinfo staff

February 20, 2007

Most of Australia's players did not want to tour New Zealand for the Chappell-Hadlee Trophy, according to the vice-captain Adam Gilchrist. Gilchrist, who was resting while his team-mates lost the series in two games, said the side did not need the three-match contest and freshening up at home would have been a better exercise.

"I'm going to be brutally honest here and say I don't think too many people wanted it on at all,'' Gilchrist said on Inside Cricket. "We've had a very hectic summer. We had a brilliant summer in Test cricket, but then we fell away in the one-day series, and that was very disappointing."

LOL. The title reminded me when I was reading a sentence on the back of a bus passing through the road in POM. It was "Oy, oy, oy"... I then asked the driver about its meaning and he said, "Oh, it's for Aussie...remember Oz, oz, oz?".

has everyone quite finished? hmmm?

anyway, i think this topic has now run its course. it's clearly out of control, and perhaps the administrator should put a stop to it.

in any case, what's it doing in current events forum? it's not news, is it? just because australia lets the kiwis win every few decades hardly warrants a headline in JakChat, does it?

It's laughable that people actually think this is for real, the Australian team has quite obviously thrown the last five games in order to make the World Cup interesting.

How could a team that was playing so good, turn 180 degrees inside 2 weeks?

Remember, big sport is big business and if it is plainly obvious who is going to win the WC (Australia), then who is going to watch it on the tele? who's gonna bet on it? who's actually going to go to the Windies and spend their money?

Now that OZ is no.2 in the world, look at the change in betting figures, this is more important.

Just as they had this incredible 'form slump' after smashing England 5-0, watch their incredible 'form reversal', when they win the WC...
