Expansion, for Retailers

Retailers say they are looking at a quieter year for sales in 2007, amid strong expansion programs by major domestic and international operators.

Retailers expect 17% growth this year compared to an estimated 20% last year, in which they made an estimated Rp50 trillion.
AC Nielsen said hypermarkets and mini-markets will grow by 25%, exceeding the estimated 15% of the overall consumer goods market.
An extra one million square meters in retail space will come on the market this year, property consultancy firm John Lang LaSalle said.

Jones Lang LaSalle Indonesia senior executive Lucy Rumantir said foreign retailers operating in Indonesia were likely to invest more in 2007 to keep up with expanding local operators. Japan's Seibu is also set to enter the Indonesian market.

After opening 12 new hypermarket stores last year, local retail firm Matahari will open 15 to 17 stores in 2007, in addition to the current 18 Matahari hypermarkets throughout the country.
French-based hypermarket Carrefour will open more than 10 stores this yeaar, to add to the current 28 outlets throughout the country, 19 of which are in Jakarta.

PT Hero Supermarket said it would open 41 new stores in 2007, spending Rp267.5 billion, after its net profit surged by 36% to Rp23.1 billion in the first nine months of 2006.
