Everybody knows the forum:

Gentlemen, Revolutionaries, Scholars & Bules ?

Here's the definition, as a reminder:

Opinions by the dozen from Jakarta's quintessential dilettante and raffish raconteur, direct from Jakarta's throbbing intellectual hub.

So? I just tried to post a topic on this forum and a message appear saying that I'm not authorised to post a topic here. HAHAHA!!! laugh I felt like the computer scanned my brain and say: Hey Kanada, you're not smart enough for that, and your english suck! Get the hell outta here and return where you belong!" The intellectual wanna be growing inside me is now gone forever... hanging on a branch in mind head.

So from now on, I will keep on talking music, picking my nose, swinging my penis in circles to imitate an airplane and praying the Simpsons will stay on TV for another 10 years!

well, you might be off on a tangent here, Orang Kanada. you may also have found a small bug in the software ...

Gentlemen, Revolutionaries, Scholars & Bules is a forum operated by riccardo more or less as a blog, thus he is the only person that can post new messages. in fact, you should not have even had the option of pressing the "new post" button! there's obviously a little bug there somewhere...

other blog-like forums include the business news digest, and dilli's jakarta.

Goering is often misquoted as saying "Whenever I hear the word 'culture' I reach for my revolver." The actual quote is "Wenn ich Kultur höre ... entsichere ich meinen Browning" from a play by Hanns Johst, but I know the feeling…

I accidentally found Treespotters blog today. If I had a revolver handy I would have drawn it.

Seems Mr Spotter doesn’t like JC – or at least parts of it. I had the distinct feeling we were all plebs in his eyes. He actually targeted Ricc, presumably the rest of us were so low under the radar that there was no need to comment.

A friend of my mothers married a Kenyan. A native. She then spent her entire life trying to puff up her husband, justify the marriage, and life in Kenya. Her attempts simply indicated to everyone that she thought she had married “below” her status. Racist I know, but this was a long time ago. By all accounts the husband was a nice decent guy. But she had a problem about it.

Now read the vast number of pseudo cultural blogs emanating from Jakarta….

Why do so many residents and expats feel the need to stress their levels of culture?

Just like my mothers friend, they know they made an embarrisaion faux pas, and try to justify it. The bloggers know they are in the cultural cesspit of the planet, so the pontificate about this and that, trying to puff themselves up. “Oh I am a man of culture – I just happen to live in Jakarta”.

Forget it guys. You are in Jakarta…..

Need I say more?

really? which ones? the only blogs coming out of jakarta are from pseudointellectual indoensians with chips on their shoulders, diary -type blogs from foreign residents, and politically oriented blogs.

by the way, treespotter is indonesian. has a few personal problems. quite racist. typical indonesian "high" class moron with a western uni degree (as opposed to a western education).

indeed. frankly, i think that in the main it's a complete waste sending indonesians to western universities. it just turns them in to arrogant snobby little shits when (or if) they return.

scholarships offered by western countries for indonesians to study in their universities would be far more effectively spent by attempting to upgrade and reform the university system here in indonesia. and by god, it needs reform ...

Ahhh – so in this case it was the Nigerian trying to justify his marriage to a White woman?

I often think (sadly) Asians arrive on earth with a chip on each shoulder.

Ask ANY Asian – they all play the piano (ESPECIALLY Chinese). Why – because they think it’s the Western Cultured thing to do. Piano or violin.

I know a girl in Singapore – nice girl, has a blog called DimSim Dolly. Nice girl, but by god what a literary snob. Read a book because you enjoy it, not for the Booker prize it won this year!

Interestingly, the Japanese have got over this inferiority complex. Now they have Kimono or more correctly Yakara days, when office staff turn up in Japanese dress. Much as in Sydney we have casual Fridays. Gunguro girls slip on the kimono, go off to learn the tea ceremony and the intricacies of Ikibana. She learns to play the Shamisenongaku, with its weired three string twangs.

The rest of Asia feel so inferior it ditches its cultural history and pretends to be western. Most of the Chinese girls I know in Sydney totally refuse to date an Asian. They will go without a man rather than be seen with a fellow Asian. Their dream is to marry a bule, and have a blue eyed blond baby. (Genetically this doesn’t happen - the baby looks Asian).

I would b far happier if Asians honoured and followed their culture. Wear tradition clothes, not western suits. Play traditional instruments – not the bloody piano.

Your culture is your heritage – not someone else’s you “borrow” for want of a better word.

Learn your history. Read you books. Burn the fucking piano and learn to play the Kempul, and the bonang panerus, learn the clempung and the rebab, the suling pelog and the suling slendro.

BE PROUD TO BE ASIAN.

this Dili - is why I like you so much. You have no pretensions, there is no attempt at being the white Raj in foreign lands.

What you get is what you see.

Well not quite. What you see is one thing, but when you wipe the droll humour and cynicism off the top, below is an excellent and acute social responsibility. I know you feel for every poor bugger in Jakarta.
