, Jakarta: The plenary meeting of the House of Representatives yesterday (10/18) approved the Draft Bill on Revisions to Law 10/1995 concerning Customs to be legalized as a law.
Under this law, according to Anwar Suprijadi, the Director General of Customs and Excises, his directorate has the authority to, amongst others, handle inter-island smuggling.
“Now that it is possible as long as certain ministers ask the Customs and Excise to eradicate the practice,” said Anwar after the meeting.
According to him, inter-island smuggling was previously difficult to cope with because the Directorate General of Customs and Excise was not authorized to control inter-island trade.
However, inter-island smuggling is the most frequent modus.
Criminal punishment has been increased in the new law in order to capture smugglers.
Sanctions can even be imposed on Customs and Excise officials that commit violations.
Nevertheless, Dradjad H Wibowo, a member of the Finance and Banking Commission at the House of Representatives (DPR), said that the law would not be effective as long as there are no improvements at the Directorate General of Customs and Excise.
