President orders trade ministry to begin addressing services export sector

Jakarta (Antara News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has ordered Trade Ministry officials to begin seriously handling the services export ssctor so that the country weuld not remain an exporter of goods only.

"I have asked the Trade Ministry to earnestly handle the potentials of the services export sector and to promote it abroad," Yudhoyono said at the opening of the 21st Exhibition of Export Products (PPE) at the Kemayoran Jakarta Fair grounds on Wednesday.

The President said the services export sector was very important but it had yet to be seriously managed.

"There are still big opportunities in the services export sector," he said on the occasion which was also attended by First Lady Ani Yudhoyono and National Handicraft Board Chairwoman Mufidah Kalla, wife of Vice President Jusuf Kalla .

Yudhoyono said export of goods had undergone significant development in the past few years. Last year, the value of goods exports reached US$85.7 billion or up by 19 percent from the figure in 2004 and it was expected to increase by US$100 billion this year.

The opening ceremony of PPE which would run until October 15 was also attended by Regional Representatives Council (DPD) Deputy Chairman Irman Gusman, Cooordinating Minister for Economic Affairs Budiono and Foreign Affairs Minister Hassan Wirayuda.

On the occasion, the President said improving the country`s performance in the export of goods and services was important in the government`s efforts to reduce poverty and unemployment and to accelerate repayment of foreign loans.

Yudhoyono said despite the continuous increase in the value of the country`s exports, Indonesian businessmen should be aware of the tight competition with other countries.

"We want the investment climate to continue to improve in order to step up the pace of economic development in the country," the President said. (*)
