President hopes additional 10,000 MW power to meet demand in Java, Bali

Bondowoso (Antara News) - President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has expressed hope that the planned production of 10,000 additional megawatts of electric power in Java and Bali islands in the 2009-2010 period would bring about balance between supply of and demand for power.

"God willing, we will be able to build new power plants producing 10,000 megawatts in the next three to four years," the President said during a meeting with Paiton Thermal Power Plant (PLTU Paiton) workers here on Monday.

On the occasion the president was accompanied by First Lady Ani Yudhoyono, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro and state electricity company PT PLN president director Edie Widiono.

The head of state noted that of the 10,000 megawatts power, 6,900 megawatts would be produced in Java and Bali while the rest would be produced outside Java.

"We hope that there will be balance between power supply and demand," Yudhoyono said, adding that to reduce the need for subsidy coal would be used instead of fuel oil and natural gas to produce the 10,000 megawatts of the electricity.

Yudhoyono said since the electric power at Paiton was produced by PT PLN, Paiton Energy and Java Energy, the three companies should cooperate harmoniously.

He said if energy supply at present and in the future did not meet its target, the country would suffer a shortage of energy.

"If there is no increase in energy supply, there will be an energy shortage that could disturb all aspects of the people?s life," he said.

Meanwhile, general manager of PLN`s electricity generation for Java and Bali, Mulyo Aji, said PLN was hoping the plans for production of 10,000 additional megawatts of power in the next three and four years would really be carried out.

However, he said it was feared there would be a power scarcity between 2006 and 2009 when the additional power energy was starting to be used.

Mulyo Aji said PLTU Paiton was producing 3,200 megawatts of electricity by consuming 35,000 tons of coal per day.

After the dialog with PLTU Paiton workers, the President and his entourage boarded a Navy ship which took them to Madura where they would attend a ?Nuzulul Quran" function on Monday night.(*)
