The US just got two new laureates in Physics yesterday so I was looking at the totals here.

Nobel laureates by country
Pos Country Total
1 United States 170
2 United Kingdom 112
3 Germany 94
4 France 51
5 Switzerland 25
6 USSR and Russia 21
7 Italy 19
=8 Canada 18
=8 Sweden 18
=8 Netherlands 18
11 Hungary 16
=12 Denmark 14
=12 Poland 14

OTHERS
Japan 12
S. Africa 9
Australia 9
Israel 8
Ireland 6
China 6
Egypt 4
New Zealand 3
East Timor 2
St. Lucia 2
Ghana 1
Tibet 1
Trinidad & Tobago 1
Ghana 1
Puerto Rico 1
Pakistan 1
Iran 1 (woman who has death fatwa on her)
Myanmar 1
Indonesia

Nobel Prizes by selected religion:***
Jewish -- 178 Nobel Prizes
Hindu --- 6 prizes (4 in hard science)
Muslim -- 7 prizes (1 is Ahmadiya, another has a death fatwa on him and another converted to Christianity.) So actually just 4 "real" muslims.

***strange that the Committee only categorized these 3 religions (found the Hindu list), there are no lists for any other religions.

Four of the seven Muslim ones were Peace Prizes, one was Literature - neither is a test of intelligence - one of those four Peace Prize winners was Yasser Arafat, who was a terrorist.

I updated the list above with more info.

One thing that really stood out like a giant sore thumb was this: Among ALL the "Muslim Majority" countries, from Sudan to Saudi and Afganistan to Indonesia --- only Egypt, Iran and Pakistan have produced Nobel laureates.

One can look at that any way one chooses -- Label me a jerk, accuse the Nobel Committee of Bias, or Realize that there IS a serious problem about the way some countries are unable to produce quality human resources.

Ricky....I think that Sudan, Saudi, Afghanistan and Indonesia itself just too busy banned Playboy and yelling about Jihad (when I don't know their motivation for it since bombing innocent people)
and busy with their business collecting wifes. Correct me if I'm wrong.........

And yet another reason why some countries will continue to have difficulty.

If one of the top economists in the country is unable able to even spell the word N-O-B-E-L, it could mean a bit more homework needs to be done by all.

This is from today's JP:
------
You too can win Noble Prize in economics

Kahlil Rowter, Jakarta

You say you want to win the Noble Prize in Economics, and ask me what's involved. Well, first, you have to be alive when the Noble Committee meets to discuss.
.....
The writer is chief economist, CIMB-GK Securities Indonesia. The views expressed are personal.

Look at it on a per capita basis and the numbers are even more astounding:

12.9 million jews in the world and 1.79 billion Musims.

So, all things being equal, there should be 138 times more Muslim nobel winners than Jewish winners!!!!!
