COVER STORY FOR A COUP

The 1965 takeover of Indonesia worked perfectly. It is probably the most successful covert operation that the CIA has ever carried out -- and this is proven by recently released US gov't documents.

On the morning of October 1, 1965, exactly 41 years ago this minute, as I write, the right-wing military, led by Maj.Gen. Soeharto, rid the Indonesian government of all its progressive and leftist figures and placed President Sukarno under house arrest.

The cover story (and still official RI gov't and school version) was that the Indonesian Communist Party (PKI) had tried to stage a coup, killing 6 progressive generals, on the night of Sept. 30, 1965 -- BUT the "patriotic officers" led by Soeharto foiled it and launched a counter-coup, "rescuing" the country from a communist takeover.

It remains an absurd tale -- and yet people still swallow it. The PKI was the largest Communist party outside of the socialist countries, with 3 million members and links to 15 million more in mass organizations. Yet it was totally unprepared for any such action.

Its leaders were later assassinated or jailed without ever calling out their supporters. There was no civil war. The PKI was not armed.

The officer charged with plotting the coup, a Lt. Col. Untung of Sukarno's palace guard, was not a communist, but a nationalist who worked closely with the president. He and Air Marshal Omar Dhani later testified that they had attempted to break up a clandestine "Council of Generals" that, with CIA assistance, was plotting to overthrow Sukarno.

They killed six of the generals on Sept. 30, but the main leaders of the plot escaped.

The surviving generals then accused all the members of Sukarno's cabinet of participating in an attempted communist coup. The whole government was rounded up and some were summarily executed.

Clearly, Soeharto and his gang, along with the CIA, were the real coup organizers.

They destroyed the civilian government. But they also did much more.

They made the rivers in many parts of Indonesia literally run red with the blood of their victims. For months, the army went from village to village, island to island, shooting and hacking to bits whoever was pointed out to them by local reactionaries as "trouble makers."

The iSlamists, police, landlords and merchants used this holocaust as the opportunity to settle old scores and take care of the 3-million member PKI in the process. Hundreds of thousands who survived the killings were herded off to barbaric concentration camps, where many died.

Looking at the events of 1965, an honest historian would logically conclude that a military coup had taken place: a civilian government (under Sukarno) ousted violently and replaced by a military regime under Soeharto.

However, a curious and significant fact is that the military was able to brainwash Indonesians and convince most that "a coup is a non-coup". HOWEVER, the rest of the world now clearly knows that the right-wing elements of the military initiated and directed the whole show, just like a wayang kulit puppet show -- the dalang being the CIA with the strings being Soeharto and his gang.

Here's at least one decent Internet link on more about this amazing tale:

Even some story was clear but what about Soekarno itself? He don't want PKI being remove?

why should Sukarno have wanted the PKI removed? they were a legal and legitimate political party with -- if i remember rightly -- more than 16% of the popular vote in the 1955 elections.

Correct me If i'm misreading you MT, but there seems to be an underlying assumption that Sukarno was "guilty" because he did not ban the PKI, "because the PKI was so inherently evil."

Millions of Indonesians (and Americans) have been told by their governments for the past several decades that communism = the ultimate evil.

But that's not even close to the truth. In India's state of Kerala, they have a very strong Communist party that regularly wins majority of the state legislature (like DPRD) by democratic voting, and if the voters don't like them they lose seats in the next election -- all very civil.

The biggest "problem" with communists is that their ultimate goal is re-distribute wealth from the Business Tycoons (konglmerat), and spread more money around to workers and farmers, schools and hospitals. And you know there are many elite people in power in some countries that are very afraid of those things, and do see that as a major problem! So, they launch a 30-year campaign of propaganda (for the past 50 years in the US) to make the whole country believe that communism = evil.

Communism is, in fact, just a "normal" political belief system with some good things and some bad things like all the others.

Thank you Kuku for the info, I must check it......

Just like you said Riccardo and in reality in a capitalist country itself there one important matter that once which make communist is interesting is not the poverty syndication itself but reality that poverty made by injustice which not taking care off. Just like Stalin or Nikolae Ceausescu and Soeharto itself keeping those state properties for their own family?

More on India's Communists:

The Communist Party of India (Marxist), or CPI(M), is a political party in India. It is strongest in the states of Kerala, West Bengal and Tripura. In all of these states, as of 2006, it currently holds the most seats in the state parliaments.

And some more interesting facts about Kerala State:

The living standard of Keralaites is the highest overall when compared to the national level (all of India). With a population of about 30 million, the state is India's most developed society in terms of education, literacy and health. In fact, Kerala has the highest Physical Quality of Life Index (PQLI) in India and the highest Human Development Index. With the highest literacy rate in the country, highest life expectancy, least population growth, lowest infant mortality, Kerala has been adopted by the world bodies as the role model for developing countries.*

*also from wiki.

I lived there for one year, and Kerala also has the best surfing in India and the best food in India, like iddli and puli fish curry and masala dosha. The only problem is, unlike, other states of India, they've actually had the nerve to give women free education all the way through university! Can you imagine, maybe communists really are evil ;-) ...(i don't know how do those silly smiley faces, but yes those last two sentences are my kind of joke, MT)
