Bob Mathias, 2-time Olympic gold medal Decathlete, died today at his home in California at the age of 75.
The world loses a great one indeed. I grew up near his hometown and while we might have claimed him as ours
, he was legend for all, and his greatness (he won a friggin' gold medal at age 17!) inspired people far and wide. He later graduated from Stanford Univ. and became an officer in the USMC and later a US Congressman.
This is a real time of mourning for me personally, but I had a nice laugh through very "un-dry" eyes when I read this quote from the Daily News article below, where his coach asked the 17-year-old high schooler to do his first ever decathlon just a few months before he would win the Olympic gold medal in London '48: "That's great, Coach, it sounds like fun. But just one question: what's a decathlon?" http://www.dailynews.com/news/ci_4281446
