DPR passes new citizenship bill into law

Jakarta (Antara News) - All political party factions in the House of Representatives (DPR) here Tuesday agreed to pass a new citizneship bill into law.

The approval was expressed in a DPR plenary meeting, which was led by DPR Deputy Speaker Soetardjo Soerjogoeritno of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP).

Slamet Effendi Yusuf, chairman of the DPR special committee on the citizenship bill, in his report in the plenary meeting said that the new law was made to replace the Law no.62/58 on nationality.

The new law is a phenomenal product which eliminated gender and ethnic discriminations, according to Slamet.

Children from international marriage will get double citizen until they reach 18 years old or more, and then they have to choose their one citizenship, either Indonesian or others.

The Article 2 of the law quotes the Article 26 of the 1945 Constitution, which states "Indonesian citizens are indigenous people of Indonesia and other nationals who have been legalized by the law as Indonesian citizens".

In the new law, the Article 26 of the Constitution has been given an explanation on term of "Indigenous Indonesian people", namely Indonesian people who have become Indonesian citizens since their births, and have never received other countries` citizenships at their own will.

Effendi Yusuf said that in the law, it is also stated that the Government must soon prepare regulations on the implementation of the law, at the latest six month after the law is adopted.

Justice and Human Rights Minister Hamid Awaluddin considered the new law as progressive especially concerning the cross marriage between Indonesian men and foreign women.

Their children will automatically become Indonesian citizens to follow their fathers` nationality.

"For Indonesian women who marry foreigners, their citizenship will not be automatically revoked. So, it`s quite a progressive law," he said. (*)
