Govt plans to build international port in Indramayu

Cirebon, W Java (Antara News) - The central government planned to build an international sea port in Cantigi sub-district, Indramayu district to reduce the burden of Tanjung Priok port which in the next five years will be busy handling exports and imports, an official said.

Irianto MS Syarifuddin, head of the Indramayu administration, said here on Sunday that the government would allocate US$750 million from the state budget to build the port called Indramayu International Sea Port.

"The construction work will begin next year and scheduled for completion in five years. So the port can be operated by 2012," he added.

To support the realization of the port project, the government will build a tollroad connecting Cikampek and Cirebon passing Indramayu district, so that commodities from Bandung, Purwakarta and Karawang can be exported through the port.

Irianto also said his administration was expediting the construction work.

In the first stage, the administrtation will clear 200 ha of land in the sub-district and a number of hectares in the following years to make the construction work run more smoothly.

The new jobs offered by the new sea port, he said, were expected that to step up economic growth in the region.(*)

which begs the question, whatever happened to the habour project in Bojonegara?! it's already partly built, and it seems to be a far better choice than indramayu, in terms of location and infrastructure.
