Tempo Interactive, Jakarta: The International Finance Corporation (IFC-PENSA), a World Bank group company, is coupled with PT Nusantara Bona Pasogit (NBP), a holding company of thirty three People's Credit Banks (BPR), to provide credit for a minimum of 20,000 active small- and medium-sized businesses in Indonesia.

The number, according to Rudy Prasetya from IFC-PENSA, rose 25 percent from the current total debtors funded by NBP. The total borrowing which has been distributed to around 16,000 active customers reached Rp117.6 billion.

Rudy is optimistic that the target of 20,000 customers can be fulfilled by the program called BPR-Business Expansion Technical Assistance (BPR-BETA).

This project will also hold training and assistance for officers from both financial organizations. Investors will also improve the operational activity of the debtors business by implementing a bank program network system which is integrated for all BPR members.

IFC-PENSA will provide seven experts and several consultants to develop the program for one year. The technical aid is worth US$190 thousand. “This fund will be borne 50-50 by IFC and NBP,” said Rudy.

Besides the target increasing of the active creditors, BPR-BETA also projects the savings increase from 37,500 to 44,000 accounts. That means a 17 percent upsurge, and the total account balance becomes Rp23.5 billion. The time deposit will also increase from 2,300 to 2,860. “The target is to increase 24.4 percent with a total of time deposit accounts becoming Rp56.7 million,” he said.

Maruli Sinaga, NBP Executive Director, said these BPR-BETA projects are in line with the company's long term goal and the strategic direction from Indonesian Banking Architecture (API).

According to Maruli, the prioritized small- and medium-sized businesses are the ones appropriate to the working area. Currently NBP, established in 1989, has working areas in North Sumatera, Jakarta, West Java, and Banten.
