) - Singapore intends to help the Indonesian government in developing industrial areas in Batam and Bintan in order to make them competitive.
Singapore`s Foreign Minister George Yeo, after bilateral talks with Vice President Yusuf Kalla in Nongsa Point Marina, Batam, on Saturday afternoon, said he had met some businessmen and Indonesian government officials they would be followed by important decisions on it.
The islands of Batam and Bintan are close to Singapore. Therefore, the development of industries in Batam nd Bintan will be one of the steps to overcome unemployment as well as being able to be competitive.
Yeo said that Singapore was quite well-experienced in developing industrial estate in other countries.
On separate occasion, Governor of Riau Islands Province Ismeth Abdullah said in bilateral talks with vice president, Minister Yeo also said his government was committed to helping industrial estate in Karimun island.
Earlier, the vice president had talks with relevant economic ministers after directly hearing complaints and hopes of businessmen and association chairmen on poor enforcement of law, business certainty, frequent demonstrations, changes in minimum payment without taking into account the local inflation rate and dualism between Batam city administration and Batam authority agency.
"We had to tell the vice president about these problems because some investors have actually left Batam," said Abidin Hasibuan, Chairman of the Riau chapter of the Indonesian Businessmen`s Association.
The vice president, according to Hasibuan, positively responded to the issues by planning to review and revise manpower rulings in order to match them with the region`s inflation rate.(*)
