You see even in a stable looking country like thailand military have just taken power. I saw pictures of shooting military and tanks rolling over goverment buildings in bangkok. Good that at least Indonesia seems to be quite stable now. it would be horrible to have somebody like wiranto on power.. shoot

Yes just saw the news, Shinawatra is finished. But a what a complete and total bummer for Thai TV viewers:

All Thai television stations were placed under military control and played continuous footage in honor of King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

Here's an Asia Times story from Bangkok

http://atimes.com/atimes/Southeast_Asia/HI21Ae01.html

And an updated Reuters story:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20060919/ts_nm/thailand1_dc_5

BANGKOK (Reuters) - The Thai army took control of Bangkok on Tuesday without a shot being fired, dismissed Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, revoked the constitution and promised a swift return to democracy after political reforms.

it seems to be a quite coup. im hapy for the thai people. Thaksin wasnt a very good pm anyhow and very unpopular. As long as there is no militairy dictatorship holding on to power I guess in the end it will ok.

I dont think the lack of TV will piss them off! The all have Karaoke machines in thier houses!

Thaksin really only pissed off the Middle & Upper Classes due to his taxation policies. The poor were in fact much better off than beforewith increased medical and educationl benefits which were funded by, er, um taxes on the Middle & Upper Classes!

Am watching Bush speaking live now at the U.N. He has scrapped his prepared speech and is addressing the crisis in Thailand. He's appealed to all the member nations to join the U.S. to go into Thailand and restore the democratically-elected Thaksin government. It is unbelievable the response he is getting, nearly every nation except Somalia has joined the coalition. The decision has been made to invade Pattaya, Phuket, and selected areas of Bangkok, mainly around Sukhumvit and Soi 4. The troops of all nations are said to be enthusiastically behind Bush's plan (for a change). Even some of the representatives at the U.N. have volunteered to be in-country technical advisors....here, let me give you some of Bush's remarks..."...as we battle the enemy of freedom and democracy on the sois of Thailand, we will encounter an enemy who will stop at nothing to defeat the forces of freedom. We know securing sites along Patpong and Soi 6 Pattaya, where terrorists take many forms near the deadly triangle of Massage Parlours, Go-Go Establishments and the Blow Job Bars will not be easy...it will indeed be hard, very hard, but we have a coalition of hard...very hard soldiers who are committed to restore democracy to our friends in Thailand

Hope my house doesn't get run over by tanks!

He also pissed them off when he and his family sold their telkom empire for something like 2.1 billion USD and did not pay any taxes on the sale.

It's very simple. The bastard Thaksin didn't want to give enough kick-backs to the military ... what happened now was a looooooong time coming!!

A German friend who was working at the Thai Airport during the Asian financial crisis saw Thaksin with SUITCASES full of money leaving the country .... he is as shameless a bastard as many Indonesian politicians! Problem is ... being of Chinese origin and sneaky, he doesn't like to share ..... and that was his undoing!

That can, in the long run, only be good for Thailand, provided someone LESS greedy rises to power!

Indonesia? Far worse things have happened here, and will certainly happen again!
