Indonesian tsunami death toll nears 400 : officials

Pangandaran (Antara News) - At least 396 people were killed by the tsunami that smashed into the southern coast of Indonesia's Java island, the social affairs ministry said Wednesday.

About 700 people were injured and 187 remained missing, according to figures compiled by the ministry's disaster relief coordinating post.

The highest toll was recorded in the beach resort area of Pangandaran, where 118 people were killed, the figures showed.

The area lies in West Java's Ciamis district, about 270 kilometres (170 miles) southeast of the Indonesian capital Jakarta.

At least six foreigners are believed to have been among the dead.

Authorities here have confirmed one Japanese and a Belgian national were killed. Sweden's foreign ministry said one of its nationals had died, while Dutch authorities confirmed a Dutchman had also died.

A Saudi Arabian national told AFP he had brought the bodies of his wife and son to a hospital morgue on Tuesday.

The tsunami was triggered by a 7.7-magnitude undersea earthquake to the south of Java island on Monday afternoon. (*)

And Here's the ad note on howe the Great Indo Gov. reacted when the Earthquake struck...

Officials received a tsunami warning 20 minutes before the first wave (of two) hit the southern shores of Java. They did not act upon it because they were too busy monitoring the aftershocks of the 7.7-magnitude quake that triggered the tsunami to raise the alarm.

The government's science and technology minister, Kusmayanto Kadiman, confirmed last night that Indonesia had received bulletins from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii and Japan's meteorological agency after the quake, but "we did not announce them".

"If it [the tsunami] did not occur, what would have happened?" he said in Jakarta.

LATEST FROM JAKARTASS

Bandung 1.10pm

Just back from first visit to Pangandaran trying to find some people (and to check on condition of holiday home).
Probably delayed shock, but can't stop crying. I've never, never seen anything like this. Unbelievable devastation. Just rubble and little else.
Dogs still pulling bodies out. Only food is stuff sent from Bandung. I've got enough tins for a while but there's nothing fresh.
Certainly no beer anywhere; and just when I need it most.

A friend

Other info. coming through indicates that there isn't a groundswell of aid arriving in the coastal region, except, possibly, from Bandung, as the regional centre. Vice President Kalla has indicated that local authorities will be responsible for the rescue efforts, with some financial help from central government.

Three days now, and i bet no aid has been sent.

A switched on team with funding access would re renting local trucks, shipping food, clean water, and tentage across Java.

Right now, in a bar in Jakarta, some aid worker is swilling a beer.

I remember meeting one bright English git in a bar last year - he was sent over on humanitarian aid. his main worry was how to seal the floors against dust in new hospitals..... People were sleeping in the open, children were dying of disease, and he worried about sealing a floor.

In the story linked below, the guy "Andrew" that they interview is a Jaksa regular, better known as "surfer Andy". In recent years he has split his time between Jakarta and his home down there.
