The current oil shock, the rise in fuel prices, which will never go down again, mean many things;

1. economic recession. the world marches on diesel tanks, its runnig out, and its getting expensive. Mad Max 2 is on its way.

2. costly petrol. Its $1.50 a L in sydney, pretty soon it will be $2. second hand car prices have fallen 30%........

3. An end to cheap air fares, backpacker tourists etc. 747s drink fuel big time.

sadly our nice little world is about to end. And I dont have a solution.. All over the owlrd, governments are in panic. Australia is putting its hopes in nuclear power.... The Kyoto agreement is now worthless.

Maybe a sailing boat it the answer. I honestly dont know where you sail to mate....

Kuku are you want to runaway from us????

Influences for the highly crude oil prices for the global economic:
1.Transfer of Income
There was a transfer income from the importer country to the oil exporter country by term of trade mutation.

2.Production cost
The highly prices for the crude oil will make the production cost rising up, and pressure the company profit.

3.Inflation and Price level
The highly inflation will depends on pass through inflation effect of the crude oil prices for the domestic inflation, energy regulation from the country itself, consume reaction for decline real income and ask for the salary increase higher, and how the producer trying to make the profit margin back.

4.Monetary Market
5.Oil Consumption and Production

how practical would it be to cross 600km of ocean in a outboard boat? could it be done in less than 12 hours (daylight)?? what sort of costs would be involved (fuel, etc)? would a small aluminium boat be detectable on radar?

600km is a long way. Time and speed are factors - faster uses more fuel, and you may end up just being a floating fuel tank. You should be able to do it in 12-15 hours depending upon tides, boat design and engine power.

Open boats are a BIG risk. In a heavy swell they will swamp (buoyancy bags will keep it on the surface). You will need to bail and risk engine damage due to water ingress. If that happens you are stuffed.

Radar depends upon which one. older, land based radars probably wont see it, now will aircraft mounted ones. Naval radar is VERY good - it would pick up just the outboard engine at 30 miles.

It is do-able – JUST. But the risks are pretty high. You would need twin outboards (and pretty big ones), a damn good boat and a lot of navigation gear. You would need a pretty good reason to do it. And even then, a single storm or bad swell means you are stuffed. You will be out of sight of land for 10-12 hours. Risky……

http://www.zurnyachts.com/index_files/g20Brochure.pdf

Something like this would do it in about 10 hours, with a 140hp outboard.
