Hi Everyone,
I'm committed = eager to come to Indonesia in near future to live and work in the above. At least teaching will be my initial means of survival. I seek some opinions and facts to the following matters.

Which age group(s) is the biggest student base for English language studies in Indonesia?

What are the best times of year to get a new teaching job in Indonesia?

Are there usually teacher assistants in classes, if the teacher (like me) speaks very little Indonesian?

What's the good average pay? (I know its low by other country standards.)

Am I better advised to seek an employer before I come to Indonesia or once in !?

Anything else you can tell me is appreciated.

About me: I'm currently in Taiwan teaching. Mature age Australian male. I'm considering Bandung as my first location in Indonesia.

Thanks,
Dane

Hi Dane, the facts are:

The need of english lessons is rapidly growing here in indonesia. Mostly for preschool age, lots of preschool up to elementary english language school opened up like mushroom in moonsoon season. Poping out here and there. College and university students is also quite big. Some professionals are also having some business english lesssons taking trends nowadays. So the market is pretty big.
As far as i know some schools provide teacher assistants, but then only few.
The payment is quite vary, if you teach business english lessons you will get better payment.
Yes, i think seeking employment before you come would be better. But if you are thinking of Bandung as the place you want to work at, it'd be harder to find employer before hand. Note that Bandung is really small compared to Jakarta, thus the market.
I could ask my friend of mine who has business in english languange school franchising for more information.
Probaby, there'll be more people here could give you more information also.
Good luck, Dane

I would think very carefully.

Teaching English doesnt pay very much at all. And the cost of living, although still low, has gone up in recent years....

Yes, find a good school.

I believe somme of the "hole in the wall" cheap schools dont keep agreements, dont pay, poor students etc.

I was considering teaching at English First, while pursuing photography. Has anyone heard of this set of schools in Jakarta?

I'm currently completing TESOL certification and am about to apply with EF.

Thanks!

EF is quite good Rodney
Better than LIA and ILP i guess
School of English is also good
Or you can try to apply to very good universities like Pelita Harapan, etc
Some private universities or school pay a lot...

you know Ef is like Mcdonald, Mcdnald in everywher and also EF in everywhere..
as ex student..i think Ef is not very good..
yeah maybe for last time Ef is the best..better than LIA or any English course..
but for at this time, EF Has begun to be commercial, so sometimes quantity more importent than quality

Having sex while teaching English...interesting idea. I might have to try that myself. Good on ya PB...what a bloody good idea!

Anyone volunteering to be my very first student? However before anyone rushes in and sign up, one thing one needs to know that English was my second language. I'm just being honest so no one can complain afterward.
