Five nannies, no satisfaction
I moved to Jakarta one year ago from Canada, got married and am currently taking care of my four months old infant. As a foreigner, I'm encountering many problems here such as, cultural differences, food poisoning, traffic jams, nanny and maid issues and so forth. The list is endless.
I just wanted to raise the nanny and maid issues with other foreigners, who have to deal with endless frustration and not to mention stress.
I do not speak Indonesian fluently, therefore when I hire nannies and maids, I usually look for someone who understands English, which is quite hard to find. I have had five different nannies within a period of two months, and terminated two maids due to dishonesty.
Let's discuss the nanny issue. When I go to a nanny agency, I would at least expect professionalism when I walk in the door. Without greeting or proper introduction most agencies would just give you whatever they have and claim that the nanny is what I'm looking for.
They claim she can speak English and is experienced in looking after infants. Of course when you interview her, she would do everything possible to cover up her inadequacies.
Then when she starts work it is evident that she is not what she claimed to be. I'm not asking that they be perfect or up to par. But where is the standard? At one time, I had to repeat the same instruction twenty times to the nanny. Professionalism and safety standards are not their first priority when taking care of a young infant. I would think they always are paid above average working for foreigners because they know how to bargain with or without experience.
Next is the maid issue. Although they do not need a lot of experience, rest is their number one priority. They only clean whatever is at eye level. If they cannot reach it, they will not bother at all. And when you confront them, they will tell you the cleaning is done even though it has not been done for a month.
Then the rest of the day, they will just watch television or nap until night time.
I hope anyone who reads this can understand the frustration we encounter. I just wanted to share my experiences with others who may also have had the same problems.
Is it worth the money? I do not think so. Does it boost my blood pressure? Definitely!
