I went to the festival, great food, and good fun. Nice to see so many beautiflu Indonesian girls in one place at the ame time. it was like walking through Atrium Plaza smile

One thing I did see, but didnt understand. An Indonesian girl in a headscarf and hipster jeans, but wearing makup, and when she bent over to get something out of her bag she was wearing a veny small high ride thong type G string. This was 50cm above the top of her jeans.

So a modest covered head, but makeup and a clearly visible thong!

Can someone explain to a stipid old Polar Bear?

Oh i enjoyed. smile

In fact it once again reinforced my opinion that indonesian people are the friendliest in the world. last night i bumped into two Sumatran girls in the spa at my complex. both were beautiful, funny and flirty in a delicious way. I spent an excellent hour chatting to them. I couldnt get out of the spa without the PB suasage being evident!

Question - are all Sumatrans white skinned? Or is it just chance that all the ones I meet have very white skin?

indeed bear, many foreigners in indonesia comment on this apparent contradiction.

the girls who wear such combinations of clothing, however, rarely see a contradiction. modernist clerics, on the other hand, albiet a very small minority, refer to this phenomenon as "jilbab gaul", which roughly means "wearing an islamic headdress for social reasons".

in short, don't read too much into a woman wearing a jilbab: it's usually much more about identity than any religious piety, though in most cases there's elements of that as well.

my wife#1 always wears a jilbab, and panics at the possiblilty of being seen by a male (non-husband, non-father) without it. she wears loose fitting clothing that covers everything apart from her face and hands. she solats 5 times a days without fail. but internally, she has a lot to learn, and many of her attitudes are snobbish and particularly uncharitable. not a "religious" person in the way that you or i might define it.

my wife#2 always wears jilbab outside the house, but isn't too fussed if she's seen at home without it on. she rarely solats. she is a very practical person, and would not be called "religious".

wife#3 sometimes wears jilbab, sometimes doesn't, depends on the weather. most times she wear mid-length skirt and short-sleaved blouse. she is always reading mystical islamic books and mailing lists, and is probably the most "religious" of my wives.

wife#4 wears jilbab, but only when she leaves the house, and is not fussed at all at "strange" men seeing her without it. she attends prayer sessions very regularly, and could be called "religious" in a conventional sense.

thus, don't rush to judgment about a woman just because she wears a jilbab: it can mean nothing; it can mean everything. it all very much depends.

yep, i guess that's a way of looking at it.

actually, you will find many muslim girls in indonesia who are very devout, pray 5 times a day without fail, do the rahmadan fast properly, but who never wear jilbab. in fact, the majority of muslim women in indonesia are like this; foreigners can sometimes be surprised that the hip cool chick in the office is in fact a devout muslim!

i have such women in my own office: none wear jilbab, but all solat fairly regularly ...

Religion is indeed a very personal thing. How we interpret it, and how we implement its teachings, is a very individual decision.

Not all of them. Some are yes, especially if you bumped with Padangnese (West Sumatran) girls. People say that is because they have mixed ancestors, mixced local and chinese merchants marriages long time ago. Appantely, they inherited the famous chinese trading ability, too.
The fact of white/light skin tone colors of some indonesian girls ain't apply for sumatra girls only. Java has Sundanese girls who tend to have lighter skin compare with other girls originated from other part of Java island. Kalimantan has dayak girls, Sulawesi has manado girls and the list continue.

It much be just chance, but all of the Sumatran girls I meet are really white skinned.

The two in the pool last night looked like English girls after a long winter smile

I find the combination strangely errotic - an Asian looking girl, with black eyes and hair, but pure white skin.....

I can see the Chinese connection.....
