I was hoping that some of you would list the best books(or bad if it really stuck w/ you) that you have read this year. Please include ANY great books that have shaped you, outraged you or influenced you. Even if they were childhood books.

Here's my little list:

1) A Room Made Of Windows. This is a children's book, that is hard to find. I still reread it. It is beautiful, odd & eccentric. It hardly seems a child's book.
2)To Kill a Mockingbird. Need I say more? A perfect book on every level.
3) A Tree Grows In Brooklyn. Taught me about so many things, but one would be about poverty & life outside my own young experience.
4)The Great Gatsby. A jewel of a book & the one that kicked off my fascination for the writer's, artist & influences of the 1920's into the 1930's. In fact, anybody have any good books written about those eras?
5) Breakfast At Tiffany's. Influenced my personal style & it's just a great book. (I saw the new printed version at Aksara bookstore 2 weeks ago!)

A Comet In Moominland/Finn Family Moomintroll-by Tove Jansson: Just the best kids books EVER.Love them still.

The Man who Loved Children by Christina Stead-just an amazing book, so well written and evrything is interesting-even all the fishing crap!

The Road from Coorain-by Jill Ker Conway-I never knew I would have found the australian outback interesting before I read this book

SourSweet by Timothy Mo-hilarious chinese immigrant in london story.Excellent excellent excellent. As are all his books.

anything by agatha christie-my favorite books growing up!

Eye of the sun by Ahdaf Soueif-egyptian/english love story but so damn well written, too beautiful. Not at all soppy.

And of course the masterful A Suitable Boy by vikram seth.

Used to fancy dorothy parker short stories and anais nin too.Anais Nin basically influenced my late teens/early 20s-ha! Thought we were so cool and " on the edge"

There was a really funny story i read once, I think it was like czech writer-called something like good soldier svek? It was funny, kind of like catch 22.

And when all else fails I regress back to tintin and asterix-still!

Hi Ena,
I love Agatha Christie also! Hercule Poirot is my fave character. So amusing yet elegant!

Tintin and Asterix are evergreen amusement. Sends you immediately back to the younger years LOL

1. Pitcairn's Island -- shows human nature at its worst and best

2. Indonesia's Secret War, Robin Osborne, on Papua.

3. It's not about the bike, Lance Armstrong -- mind blowing.

4. My daughter's book, Rover, which is written from the perspective a little dog, who has this family of pet humans living with him, hilarious.

5. Krakatoa, The day the world exploded, Simon Winchester -- great, great book, history really does repeat itself and even then locals were saying "it's because of sin and upsetting Allah.."

6. Gangsters and Revolutionaries, the Jakarta People's Militia and the RI revolution 1945-1949., by Robert Cribb. This is how it all started, Civilian leaders like Sukarno gave the "heroes" military/militia, the keys to let themselves out of the zoo and NOW we see what they've sown -- the the animals are running the zoo.

7. Spice Garden, Mike Vatiokitis, an amazing semi-fictional novel about the average folks caught up in the Maluku Wars of 1999-2002.

My books this year? not many, frankly. i can't read when i'm stressed.
"The McKinsey Way" -- strange book about a strange company.
"The Ecology of Java and Bali" -- haven't read all of it, just parts relevant to my research.
"Rules of Management" -- so so
"Sriro's Desk Reference of Indonesian Law" -- alright I guess. The author really should have got a native-speaker editor to look at it before publication.
