National shrimp output projected at 350,000 tons to be achieved

Jakarta (ANTARA News) - The Ministry of Marine Resources and Fisheries believed that the 2006 national shrimp production projected at 350,000 tons, would be achieved.

Made L. Nurjana, the ministry`s director general of fish breeding said in Subang, West Java, on Sunday, that around 60 pct, or 120 tons of the output, would come from intensive breeding programs, and the remainder 40 pct from traditional fish ponds.

"We have made the business situation conducive," he said on the sidelines of a visit to a fresh water fish breeding center in Cijengkol, Subang.

He made the remarks responding to criticism that the government would not reach the target and it was predicted the figure would be lower than the 300,000 tons of fish produced in 2005.

He, however, said if his office observed the intensive breeding program, significant progress had been made, as what happened in several development areas in North Sumatra, West Kalimantan and South Sulawesi grouped in Shrimp Club Indonesia, previously reported to have "died".

According to him, judging from the progress made in shrimp breeding in SCI in Medan, Lampung, Sukabumi, Pontianak, South Sulawesi, Malang, Banyuwangi, Situbondo, Tuban, Lombok and Sumbawa, the target would be achieved. (*)

yes, they're perhaps rather too massive. huge expanses of java's coastline have also been turned over to shrimp farming, destroying coastal vegetation in the process and generally robbing future generations of a sustainable ecosystem. not to mention, making them far more susceptable to tsnunami.
