Word Cup Letter

Word Cup Letter - 22 May 06 14:23

Dear Wife, Partner, Girlfriend

1. From 9 June to 9 July 2006, you should read the sports section of the newspaper so that you are aware of what is going on regarding the World Cup, and that way you will be able to join in the conversations. If you fail to do this, then you will be looked at in a bad way, or you will be totally ignored. DO NOT complain about not receiving any attention.

2. During the World Cup, the television is mine, at all times, without any exceptions. If you even take a glimpse of the remote control, you will lose it (your eye).

3. If you have to pass by in front of the TV during a game, I don't mind, as long as you do it crawling on the floor and without any distractions. If you decide to stand nude in front of the TV, make sure you put your clothes on right after because if you catch a cold, I won't have time to take you to the doctor or look after you during the World Cup month.

4. During the games I will be blind, deaf and mute, unless I require a refill of my drink or something to eat. You are out of your mind if you expect me to listen to you, open the door, answer the telephone, or pick up the baby that just fell on the floor....It won't happen.

5. It would be a good idea for you to keep at least 2 six packs in the fridge at all times, as well as plenty of things to nibble on, and please do not make any funny faces at my friends when they come over to watch the games. In return, you will be allowed to use the TV between 12am and 6am, unless they replay a good game that I missed during the day.

6. Please, please, please!! If you see me upset because one of my teams is losing, DO NOT say "get over it, it's only a game", or "don't worry, they'll win next time". If you say these things, you will only make me more upset and I will love you less. Remember, you will never ever know more about football than me and your so called "words of encouragement" will only lead to a break up or divorce.

7. You are welcome to sit with me to watch one game and you can talk to me during halftime but only when the commercials are on, and only if the half time scores is pleasing me. In addition, please note I am saying "one" game; hence do not use the World Cup as a nice cheesy excuse to "spend time together".

8. The replays of the goals are very important. I don't care if I have seen them or I haven't seen them, I want to see them again. Many times.

9. Tell your friends NOT to have any babies, or any other child related parties or gatherings that requires my attendance because:
a) I will not go,
b) I will not go, and
c) I will not go.

10. But, if a friend of mine invites us to his house on a Sunday to watch a game, we will be there in a flash.

11. The daily World Cup highlights show on TV every night is just as important as the games themselves. Do not even think about saying "but you have already seen this...why don't you change the channel to something we can all watch?" because, the reply will be, "Refer to Rule #2 of this list".

12. And finally, please save your expressions such as "Thank God the World Cup is only every 4 years". I am immune to these words, because after this comes the Champions League, Italian League, Spanish League, Premier League, FA Cup, etc.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Re: Word Cup Letter - 05 Jun 06 11:23

From Scotland on Sunday - 4th June 2006

THE World Cup is now only days from starting and the traditional preparations for this great celebration of what we all know as the beautiful game are well under way.

All over Europe, hooligans are being curfewed or having their passports confiscated to prevent them travelling to Germany to re-stage the final battles of World War II.

In Germany itself the authorities are politely asking the local neo-Nazis not to march around giving Hitler salutes during the tournament as it won't look too good on the TV.

Back here in dear old Scotland, the Commission for Racial Equality feels compelled to warn of rising anti-English sentiment before the first ball has even been kicked.

It really does make you want to put on an England shirt, head down your local pub, stand on a table and shout "it's only a game" in your best Cockney accent. Or perhaps not.

Personally, I care not two hoots about who in this country supports whom and why, or even how they express that support.

I support England, but that's because I am English and it would seem somewhat churlish not to.

What I really enjoy though is the tournament. In the past I've watched loads of English games in Scottish pubs, and while it is sometimes odd to see so many of your fellow countrymen cheering on the opposition, I know it is, like the human race in general, mostly harmless.

In that spirit I phoned up the CRE to seek guidance on what any of my Scottish chums can chant while I am down the boozer with them enjoying my team's progress towards some no doubt cruel eventual humiliation.

For example, is it acceptable to sing that charming traditional Scottish football lament "We hate Jimmy Hill, he's a poof"? Now clearly, the last bit is unacceptable though not on racial grounds, but what about the first bit?

Well folks, according to Ali Jarvis, the CRE's boss in Scotland, it's all right to shout out that you hate Jimmy Hill. Phew, that will come as a relief to lots of people, including most of the England support. How about some anatomically specific and very personal chanting aimed at the England captain David Beckham and his lovely wife Victoria? That too is OK apparently. So please feel free.

The only problem is if we go from the deeply offensive and personal to the deeply offensive and general. From this I take it that "we hate England, and we hate England. We hate England, and we hate England. We hate England and we hate England... Cos we are the England haters" is right out of order. Oh well, never mind.

So far the CRE has had two complaints of World Cup related anti-Englishness, one of which came from a Scot. It does not exactly sound as if we are on the cusp of a race war but, hey, it's early days. Last World Cup there was an increase in football-related child bullying, the CRE says. That's no joke, but given the general nastiness of schoolchildren down the ages, it's not exactly a shock either.

It seems to me that much of this supposed tension is being created by people operating under the mistaken impression that the World Cup is some kind of major international sporting contest. If only we could view it in its correct light - as a massive marketing campaign aimed at selling lots of cheap flags at huge mark-ups to fat bald men from Essex - then we might all get along a little better.

nice article you found, dilli. but i must ask, why do otherwise sensible people in some parts of the world always insist on calling soccer the "beautiful game"? it's not beautiful; it's just a tad dumb, and better suited as a woman's game.

you shouldn't really call it football. people might get it confused with the *real* football, the one played by *real* men. the round ball game is called soccer.

fuck, what a day. non-stop. and it's going to get worse. every day i look at the bank account via the net, and groan when i see yet another new client has deposited a few thousand dollars. i find myself thinking, "oh no, not another one."

that's not a good attitude, is it? i should be grateful, shouldn't i?

well, i'm not, for some reason ...

she seems rather set on this amerikan sausage. gos knows why. there's no accounting for taste.

Re: Word Cup Letter - 05 Jun 06 21:42

Standards are written by man. we should write a standard about sausage. ASTM1000 sausage. Firstly standard say it shall not be of American origin (non American). Secondly it must be clean and free from defects. Next it must be from an earthly produce.. preferably from a downunder origin. I guess we both qualify. Please note "no Kiwi sausage allowed in this Standard because they are not from downunder".
