Crime of Passion over Sexy Caddie?

The following is all hastily plagiarized (and may be wildly inaccurate) with the futile aim of trying to make sense of contradictory information in media reports. Hopefully the media will have correct information and more details next week.

Political machinations ahead of July’s presidential election have dominated the news over recent weeks. But all that crap about Kalla-Wiranto and whether Megawati’s daughter Puan will become Prabowo Subianto’s running mate is now being overshadowed by a massive scandal.

This big news is that Antasari Azhar, the country’s top anti-graft official, is suspected of masterminding the recent murder of Nasrudin Zulkarnaen, the director of a state-owned pharmaceutical company.

The Attorney General’s Office on Friday (1/5/09) named Antasari a suspect, but police on Saturday said he is only classified as a witness at this stage.

Antasari and Nasrudin were reported to have first met while discussing a corruption case and then became golfing buddies. Golf courses have long been a favored location for corrupt state prosecutors, court officials and corruption suspects to negotiate bribes without fear of being bugged.

There are conflicting claims over the motive for the killing: Some reports say Nasrudin was killed to prevent him from testifying in a corruption case. Others claim the murder was a crime of passion because Antasari and Nasrudin were screwing the same young female golf caddie. Reports have described the caddie as Nasrudin’s “third wife” although apparently the two were not officially married. There is talk that Nasrudin had filmed Antasari having sex with the caddy and had threatened to release the footage. Another version is that the killing was conducted with the sole aim of making Antasari a suspect because powerful people feared his anti-corruption investigations.

The media has said those involved in the murder included Antasari, as well as Sigid Haryo Wibisono (a former Golkar Party official and owner of the Harian Merdeka newspaper), a military figure (or a thug-for-hire) who served in East Timor and a senior police officer.

Here’s some background on the case:

Antasari Azhar
He is scum. He was controversially made head of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in December 2007 after a tarnished career as a state prosecutor the Attorney General’s Office. When former dictator Suharto’s youngest son Tommy was sentenced to 18 months’ in jail for corruption in 2000, it was Antasari’s job to take Tommy to jail. Antasari instead allowed Tommy to go into hiding. Antasari has been accused of allowing other villains to get away with corruption. He is reported to have handed out bribes to journalists. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono did not personally appoint Antasari as head of KPK. Instead he was “elected” to the job by parliament’s 49-member commission on law and legal affairs. His election was due to intensive lobbying by Golkar and PDIP, which presumably wanted a pliable person at the helm of KPK. Since taking on the job, Antasari has led a series of investigations into corrupt prosecutors at the Attorney General’s Office, causing much embarrassment and shame.

Thus the Attorney General’s Office was quick to declare Antasari a murder suspect, even though under the Indonesian legal system, the police and the KPK have the authority to declare people to be suspects (whereas the Attorney General’s Office is supposed to formally charge suspects with crimes, based on police recommendations). Regardless, Antasari has had to temporarily step down from his position pending the investigation. The Attorney General's Office has instructed Immigration to ban him from leaving the country.

Nasrudin Zulkarnaen
Originally from Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi province. He was the president director of PT Putra Rajawali Banjaran (PRB), a pharmaceutical subsidiary of PT Mitra Rajawali Banjaran, which is itself a subsidiary of state-owned PT Rajawali Nusantara Indonesia (RNI). RNI is involved in the agricultural, pharmaceutical, trade and distribution sectors. According to a report in The Jakarta Globe, Nasrudin was appointed head of PRB for political reasons and had no prior experience in the pharmaceutical industry. He was shot in the head on March 14 and died the following day.

Nasrudin had two wives. The first, named Sri Martuti, lives in Bekasi with their one child. The second wife (whom he married in 1999) is named Arinda Irawati and lives in Tangerang with their two children. In addition to the two wives, Nasruddin was rumored to have taken a sexy young golf caddie as his third wife. More on her a bit further down.

Ranendra Dangin
He was the finance director of PRB’s holding company, RNI. He arrested by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on January 8, 2009, for allegedly embezzling Rp4.5 billion ($376,000) in proceeds from the refined sugar import monopoly controlled by RNI in cooperation with the National Logistics Agency (Bulog) over 2001-04. Ranendra's trial commenced on March 30 at the Anti-Corruption Court in Jakarta.

Rhani Juliani: The Sexy Caddie
Several reports have claimed that 22-year-old Rhani is Nasrudin’s third wife, though other reports say the two were never married. Rhani worked first as a caddie and then as a “marketing officer” at Modernland Golf Course in Tangerang, Banten province. She was expensive and had many bookings, mostly by state officials, who were known to tip generously. Some of the course’s top caddies could charge up to Rp500,000 for a round (of golf), but Rhani was the most expensive, able to charge Rp1 million. Nasrudin was a member of Modernland Golf Course. Antasari also often played there.

Rhani left the golf course last year, apparently after Nasrudin offered to look after her financially. Nasrudin was close to Rani’s family and last year invited them on a holiday to Bali. Nasrudin funded Rani’s studies at the Raharja Institute of Information Management and Computers in Tangerang.

Not much has been seen of Rhani since her sugar daddy was murdered. She and her parents have moved out of the family house in Tangerang. Rhani reportedly scarpered to Serang to stay with her grandparents. She had been questioned by police a few times in March after the killing.

Corruption Angle
Nasrudin’s brother Andi Syamsuddin said police should question the victim’s two wives – not because he suspected them – but because they must know something. He said Nasrudin had confided in him that he was worried about PRB’s “worsening plight”, so the family suspected that someone senior in the parent company might be involved in the murder.

No doubt Nasrudin would have upset a few people if he had been cooperating with KPK investigators examining the corruption in RNI. The RNI sugar monopoly embezzlement case was initially handled by the police, who never handed it over to prosecutors. The case moved forward only when the KPK took over. The case is the first of three handled by KPK involving RNI, and the only one to reach the prosecution stage thus far.

In 2005, then State-Owned Enterprises Minister Sugiharto reported to the KPK that RNI and its subsidiaries had embezzled more than Rp60 billion in funds.

In 2003, RNI and two of its subsidiaries — a money courier service and a health product importer — were reported by the Health Ministry to the police and the KPK for allegedly embezzling Rp520 billion out of Rp580 billion in funds the ministry had disbursed over a period of five years.

Some reports have said Nasrudin was to have appeared as a witness in Ranendra’s trial. But why would Nasrudin know about the embezzlement involving the sugar imports? Other reports said he knew about the corruption case involving the Health Ministry. RNI officials denied Nasrudin was on the list of witnesses summoned by the KPK.

Antasari Azhar has said Nasrudin had been providing KPK with information on several corruption cases, including the case of Ranendra and the sugar imports.

Brief Chronology of the Killing & Arrests
March 14: Nasrudin Zulkarnaen goes to Modernland Golf Course in Tangerang, Banten province. He plays only two holes before calling his driver at about 2pm and telling him they have to go to his office in Kuningan, Jakarta. Nasrudin gets into the back of the BMW, which starts to drive away. Two men on a Yamaha Scorpio motorbike approach the car as it leaves the main gate; one of the men produces a gun, aims at the window and shoots twice, hitting Nasruddin in the head.

March 15: After being in a coma for 22 hours, Nasrudin dies at Gatot Subroto Army Hospital in Central Jakarta. His two wives then accompany his body on a flight to Makassar for his funeral the next day.

April 27: Jakarta Police arrest the suspected killer, identified only by his initials as D.A.N., at Tanjung Priok Port, North Jakarta. Under interrogation D.A.N. reveals the names of four other people allegedly involved in the killing. Police subsequently arrest these four, who were identified as H.E.R., H.E.N., F.R.A.N. and A.M. They gave police the name of another alleged conspirator, identified only as E.D.

Police said D.A.N., H.E.R., H.E.N., F.R.A.N. and A.M. were assigned as “field operatives” for the killing and the only person they knew in the chain of command was E.D., who had given them orders.

Police arrest E.D., who gives them another name up the chain of command: J.E.

April 29: Police arrest J.E. at dawn at Bumi Serpong Damai in Tangerang. Interrogation of J.E. leads police to another suspect, Sigid Haryo Wibisono (the former head of Golkar Party's Central Java chapter and owner of Harian Merdeka newspaper), who is arrested in Blok A, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta. Sigid names another suspect: a former district police chief of Jakarta identified as W.

April 30: Police arrest W. at night at a karaoke bar in Tangerang. Under interrogation, W. tells police the brains behind the murder is Antasari Azhar.

And Now
Antasari’s lawyer, Ari Yusuf Ami, is denying his client was involved in a love triangle with Nasrudin and Rhani Juliani. He dismissed such claims as slander. Asked to comment on allegations that Antasari had sent a threatening SMS to Nasrudin prior to the murder, Ari said it has not been proved the SMS came from Antasari. The text of the SMS was "you know the risk".

The lawyer said Antisari regretted the move by the Attorney General’s Office to declare him a suspect. He said his client is staying at his home in Bumi Serpong Damai for the moment and on Monday will go to Jakarta Police Headquarters for questioning.

The head of Antasari’s legal team, Juniver Girsang, said the KPK leader’s family doesn’t believe he was involved in the murder. The family believes there has been an elaborate plot to discredit Antasari.

Meanwhile, police say they are still looking for two suspects in the murder case. And a lawyer for six of the arrested suspects has denied rumors that his clients are East Timorese.

What Really Happened?
(The following is all speculation and guess-work). Someone went to a lot of effort to kill Nasrudin. Which makes it unlikely the killing was some kind of spontaneous crime of passion. Detikcom has quoted an anonymous law enforcer as saying that Nasrudin was ambitious and wanted to advance his career in state-owned enterprises, so he lobbied KPK (specifically Antasari) to reveal the corruption of his superiors in RNI. The source said Nasrudin used Rhani as "bait" to entrap Antasari. In other words, Nasrudin encouraged Rhani to screw Antasari (and Nasrudin presumably got evidence of their tryst) and then threatened to publicly expose Antasari if the corruption case did not proceed. But Anatasari could not continue with the case because RNI had been funding a major political party (presumably Golkar) to which Antasari himself was indebted. Thus Antasari was in a dilemma - risk prosecuting the company/party that he owed, or risk having his tryst with the caddie exposed. Antasari informed a businessman friend - Sigid Haryo Wibisono (the Golkar guy) - of his problem. Sigid then got in touch with another businessman and a police officer (with the initials W.W.), and the plan was hatched to murder Nasrudin.

Given the high stakes, Nasrudin's brother has urged police to guarantee the safety of the two detained hitmen, due to fears they could be killed (or given death threats) to cover the tracks of the masterminds.

The caddie at the center of the sex-corruption-blackmail-murder-political scandal, Rani Juliani, has two blogs.

1. http://rani-juliani.blogspot.com/
This one has a dodgy radio playing. Her last posts were back in November 2008. Nothing very interesting, except she is suddenly getting a lot of comments, some of them somewhat unkind.

Some of the comments in her shoutbox:
albert: "menurut gue, loe pasti pake magic. tampang loe engga bgt. jelek dan gaya kampung. so u must have a magic spell to attract Mr. N and Mr. AA."

antasari: "hai rani jgn sembunyi dong????,klo aq dthn gmn,nt aq sendirian, trus pelerq aq gmn? di asah dimana? masa lobang wc penjara,kn lbh enk di lobang mu"

Rani Juliani: "Kenapa sih kalian pada sinis? Bebas saja kan saya NGENTOT sama Antasari atw aki2 lain? Meskipun Udah bangkotan tapi masih LIAT Brow!!!"

2. http://ranijuliani.blogspot.com/
There's not much happening on this one except for her brief profile, which is getting a lot of views.

She's also on Facebook, but has not accepted my friend request yet.

Azhar is giving a press conference now.

A belated press conference. Was supposed to be at 10am but Antasari was "still asleep". Yeah, right. Expect a massive cover-up if the hit on Nasrudin really was ordered by Golkar.

Nasrudin's lawyer Boyamin Saiman today said the two hitmen were not professional killers, but were "public servants" (could mean they were soldiers or police or public order thugs or ?), who were deceived into conducting what they thought was a mission to defend the country. The two had been told that Nasrudin was an enemy of the state who must be eliminated.

Saiman said the two had previously worked as debt collectors. He said four days before the murder of Nasrudin, the two had used a government vehicle while on a debt collecting job.

Antasari made a show of kissing his wife at the press conference (which has just ended), to let us know he's a loyal husband and could not possibly have been screwing the caddie.

The four-hour delay of the press conference might have been because Antasari was trying to convince his wife, Ida Laksmiwati, to stand by him. Or because his advisers were scripting him to say nothing about the murder he instigated with some Golkar and police figures.

According to the word on the street: The murder of Nasrudin was not a crime of passion. Nasrudin apparently wanted KPK to expose corruption involving his rivals in the state-owned enterprises sector. This would have meant promotion for Nasrudin, who befriended KPK chief Antasari Azhar. It seems Nasrudin got Antasari to have sex with his caddie, Rani Juliani, and documented the tryst. He threatened to expose the affair unless KPK dealt with the corruption case involving his superiors. But Antasari could not deal with that case because the company involved had been giving embezzled funds to Golkar – and Antasari owed his position to Golkar. Thus Antasari conspired with former Golkar Central Java chapter head Sigid Haryo Wibisono (who also owns the Harian Merdeka newspaper) and a senior police figure to kill Nasrudin. Some reconnaissance men and hitmen were hired and the job was done.

The bit about Nasrudin wanting corruption exposed and using his caddie girl to blackmail Antasari sounds a bit too convoluted to be true. I wouldn't be posting this spurious libelous rubbish if there were some facts being reported by the local press. It could well be that Antasari has been set up by some powerful enemies (yet in setting him up, they also drop Golkar in the mess).

At today’s press conference at his house, Antasari played the victim. He said his wife Ida Laksmiwati and their kids were a source of strength for him in these difficult times. He also said he had started praying to Allah.

Eager to not talk about the murder, Antasari said corruption eradication must continue despite his suspension. He said he would continue to support efforts of the police and Attorney General’s Office to combat corruption. He categorically denied being involved in a love triangle with Rani and Nasrudin. He also denied being involved in a corruption case. “It’s all untrue.”

Laksmiwati said she trusted her husband. She dismissed the murder allegation against him as a form of terrorism. "Regarding the current news, I continue to believe to my husband. That’s only terrorism.” She said she had been accustomed to such “terrorism” since her childhood because her father had also been a “law enforcer” and the terrorism had increased since Antasari became KPK chief, so she was not surprised by the latest allegations.

Police haven’t been saying much today. There have been fears that the detained killers might be dealt with behind closed doors to prevent them from exposing the masterminds of the murder. One of the suspected killers, Henrycus (from Flores), was taken out of Jakarta Police headquarters by police investigators this afternoon. He was not handcuffed but was closely escorted by four policemen. Jakarta Police detention officer Aiptu Ali said he did not where the investigators were taking Henrycus (who did not have a lawyer). He said five other suspects in the case were still being detained at police headquarters.

Finally! The Jakarta Post sheds some light on the case:

Antasari: “I have been summoned as a witness”
Irawaty Wardany | The Jakarta Post | Sun, 05/03/2009

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chairman Antasari Azhar has denied he has been named a suspect in the murder case of state enterprise director Nasrudin Zulkarnaen.

“I have received a warrant for questioning as a witness from the Jakarta Police precinct and I will fulfill the summons on Monday,” Antasari told a press conference at his residence in Giri Loka 2 residence in Tangerang, Banten on Sunday.

Nasrudin, the director of state firm PT Putra Rajawali Banjaran, died on March 15 from gunshot wounds he sustained in a drive-by shooting that took place a day earlier as he left the Modernland golf course in Tangerang.

The Attorney General’s Office (AGO) had previously announced Antasari a suspect in the murder case on Friday, replacing the police who should have made the call.

However, it was not clear what role Antasari allegedly played in the case or the motive behind the assassination.

Antasari said he could not comment about why he was being implicated in the case. “As a legal enforcer I respect the legal process, so I cannot comment on the substance of the case so far”.

And a cursory overview by Reuters:

Indonesia police to quiz anti-graft chief in murder case
Reuters
Sunday, 03 May 2009

Indonesia's anti-graft chief said he would make a statement to police on Monday after being named a suspect in a murder investigation and put on temporary leave.

Antasari Azhar, head of the Corruption Eradication Commission(KPK), on Sunday denied some reports circulating in local media about the case but he declined to comment when asked by reporters if he was involved in the killing of a businessman in March. One of his lawyers has said he was innocent.

The announcement on Friday by the attorney-general's office that Azhar was one of several suspects in the murder has shocked Indonesians and dealt a blow to the agency.

Azhar, making his first public comments since the announcement, said he had been summoned to police questioning on Monday as a witness and not as a suspect.

"My status remains as a witness as stated in the letter from the police," said Azhar, 56, speaking calmly outside his home in Tangerang, west of Jakarta, accompanied by a team of lawyers.

"Regarding the opinion and reports I strongly state that they're all not true," he said without elaborating.

The case revolves around the murder of Nasrudin Zulkarnaen, a director of state-owned pharmaceutical firm Putra Rajawali Banjaran. Zulkarnaen, who had been a witness in a corruption case investigated by the agency, was shot by two gunmen in March.

Several high-profile politicians and officials, including some from the attorney-general's office, have been charged and imprisoned as a result of the commission's investigations.

The agency has also made many enemies.

"Threats are in my daily diet. I'm not surprised at all at what's been reported. I still trust my husband. It's just another form of terrorising," Azhar's wife, Ida Laksmiwati, told reporters.

On Friday night, the KPK said Azhar's four deputy chairmen would take over his duties.

The KPK, the police and the attorney-general's office "should not slacken in our efforts and plans, they must move forward and commit to fighting corruption", Azhar said.

Nasrudin’s Murder a Test Case for Country
The Jakarta Globe | Editorial | May 3, 2009

In recent days, the fact that police called Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chief Antasari Azhar as a witness in the March 14 gangland-style murder of Nasrudin Zulkarnaen has dominated the news.

Carried out with awful precision, and filled with the possibility of a love triangle and links to corruption cases and high-ranking officials, the murder itself was gruesome — and sensational. Add to that the name of a man as powerful as anticorruption czar Antasari and the killing of Nasrudin, a director of a state-owned enterprise and a KPK witness, has become a matter for rumor, fevered speculation and multiple theories about the murder. But this is not a parlor game; this is a highly serious matter for the country.

First, the fact that Nasrudin could be gunned down in broad daylight in what appeared to be a well-orchestrated shooting is chilling. Given his ties to the KPK and his status as a witness, the murder could frighten many potential anticorruption witnesses. That fact alone makes it vital that police get to the bottom of the shooting.

We can ill afford to allow our society to be perceived at home or abroad as lawless. We are all too familiar with the string of unsolved political murders in the Philippines. Those terrible incidents, going back decades and rarely solved, have hurt that country’s image and given it a reputation for being dangerous and unstable. Similarly, the recent shooting of a leading anti-Thaksin protest leader in Thailand, Sondhi Limthongkul, has raised the stakes in the ongoing political crisis there, compounding a sense that events may be spinning out of control. Here, a number of high-profile murders also remain unsolved.

It is too early to know what really happened in the case of Nasrudin. Even the circumstances surrounding the naming of Antasari have been filled with confusion. When his name first surfaced on Thursday as police were arresting nine suspects for the murder, it seemed incredible. Then the Attorney General’s Office added to the confusion on Friday by saying Antasari was a “suspect.” The police summons, however, clearly calls him a witness. Antasari has denied involvement and has been suspended from his duties pending the outcome of the investigation and legal proceedings.

This is as it should be. The work of the KPK, while occasionally flawed, is vital in investigating and prosecuting corruption. We can ill afford to have the entire body tarnished by the legal troubles of just one man.

The greater issue, however, is the perception that murder can go unpunished. The police are to be applauded for moving with deliberate speed on this high-profile case. Safety and security, after food and shelter, are the most basic of human needs. Indonesians deserve security from such heinous crimes. We must be free to go about our daily lives without fear.

The police and the judicial system are crucial to creating a climate of social peace, safety and security. This may be a test case for these values. No matter where it leads, the murder must be solved. If Antasari — or anyone else— is named as a suspect, they must be suspended from any government position and brought to trial swiftly.

Indonesia's anti-corruption boss named as suspect in 'love triangle' murder
The Sydney Morning Herald
Tom Allard Indonesia Correspondent, Jakarta
May 3, 2009

ANTASARI AZHAR, the head of Indonesia's powerful corruption watchdog, has been named as a suspect in the killing of a senior executive amid allegations of a love triangle gone wrong and a murder plot organised by a clique from Jakarta's elites.

Mr Azhar's lawyer has dismissed the notion his client masterminded the assassination of Nasrudin Zulkarnaen, describing it as a "grand scenario" by unnamed conspirators to destroy a graft-busting crime fighter.

The Corruption Eradication Commission, or KPK, is arguably the country's most respected institution, an independent body set up by the Government to tackle the endemic culture of graft. It has snared some prominent scalps along the way and bolstered the credentials of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at home and abroad.

However, its pristine reputation was dented when the Attorney-General's spokesman, Jasman Panjaitan, declared on Friday that Mr Azhar was the suspected brains behind the murder of Mr Zulkarnaen, an executive with PT Putra Rajawali Banjara, a state-owned pharmaceuticals firm.

A travel ban has been imposed on Mr Azhar before his interrogation by police today.

Mr Zulkarnaen was shot in the head by a man on a motorcycle as he left a golf course south of Jakarta in his BMW on March 14. Two days later police reportedly found a text message on Mr Zulkarnaen's mobile phone from Mr Azhar saying, reportedly, "You know the risk."

Police were then alerted to Mr Zulkarnaen's involvement with a young woman named by Antara News agency as Rani Julianti. Mr Zulkarnaen's family and lawyers say Mr Azhar was infatuated with the woman, 22, said to be a golf caddy.

According to a family friend, Mr Zulkarnaen threatened to expose Mr Azhar's relationship with Ms Julianti to Jakarta's voracious gossip media, prompting the alleged threat to his life via SMS. A friend and golf partner of Mr Zulkarnaen, Jeffrey Lumempouw, said he was told of the message on the course just hours before the murder.

"The name of Antasari was in the text message," he told Indonesian media. But a lawyer for Mr Azhar, Juniver Girsang, denied his client had any relationship with Ms Julianti and said there was a conspiracy to besmirch Mr Azhar.

Among those caught by the KPK have been senior staff at the attorney-general's department. The eagerness of the Attorney-General to publicly name Mr Azhar before his interview with police has also raised suspicions.

In addition, associates said Mr Zulkarnaen was providing the KPK with detailed information about graft at his own company, raising the possibility that he was killed by colleagues about to be exposed, who then set up Mr Azhar.

Police have already arrested the alleged killer, reportedly an East Timorese who fought with the pro-Indonesian militia and was "skilled at shooting".

The rider of the motorcycle from which Mr Zulkarnaen was shot has also been detained, as has the alleged recruiter of the assassin, apparently a senior police officer from Jakarta.

Two other men, allegedly the financiers of the plot, have also been arrested. One is Sigit Haryo Wibisono, the owner of the newspaper Harian Merdeka.

"SHW is the man who promoted [Mr Azhar] to the KPK head position," said Boyamin Saimin, a friend of Mr Zulkarnaen who has been helping police with their inquiries. "He lobbied parliamentarians."

The Jakarta Globe has filled in some gaps. The former Jakarta district police chief with the initials W.W. arrested over the murder is former South Jakarta Police chief Willy Wiliardi.

And Rani Juliani has reportedly been taken into protective custody by police. According to detikcom, she is being held in a "secret location", more specifically, in an apartment.

"And Rani Juliani has reportedly been taken into protective custody by police. According to detikcom, she is being held in a "secret location", more specifically, in an apartment"

The police probably want to see what all the fuss is about ... No doubt she is charging 1 Juta a round

Also, arrest of J.E. leads to arrest of Sigid Haryo Wibisono, a businessman who is a former head of the Golkar Party's Central Java chapter.

Why is The Jakarta Post so reluctant to run these stories? Buried today's story on the bottom of page two.

ain't half obvious that they are burying the story. proof -- if any more was required -- of the vested interests that The Jakarta Post represents.

The Jakarta Post
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Jump to: navigation, search
The Jakarta Post Type Daily newspaper
Format Broadsheet
Owner PT Bina Media Tenggara
Editor Endy M. Bayuni
Founded 1983
Headquarters Jakarta, Indonesia
Website www.thejakartapost.com

The Jakarta Post is a daily English language newspaper in Indonesia. With an average circulation of around 50,000 copies[citation needed], it is the largest English language newspaper in Indonesia. The paper is owned by PT Bina Media Tenggara, and the head office is in the nation's capital, Jakarta. The newspaper was launched on 25 April 1983.

The Jakarta Post is a small but influential newspaper oriented towards local English-speaking expatriates and the diplomatic community.[citation needed]

The newspaper is owned by a consortium of competing Indonesian-language newspaper companies. Shareholders include Gramedia (owners of Kompas, by far Indonesia's biggest newspaper), Tempo, Suara Karya (a newspaper with close links with the former governing Golkar Party) and Sinar Harapan. Twenty percent of equity is now provided as a collective share for all non-foreign employees of the newspaper.

The history of the Post dates back to a conversation in mid-1982, between then-minister for information Ali Moertopo and Mr. Jusuf Wanandi, who represented the government-backed Golkar newspaper Suara Karya. Minister Moertopo suggested the possibility of publishing an English-language newspaper that would be able to provide an Indonesian perspective to counter what he perceived to be "highly unbalanced" Western-dominated news and views.

Slank Shocked at Role of Intellectual Actor

Irawaty Wardany , The Jakarta Post , Jakarta | Mon, 05/04/2009 2:40 PM | National

Concern over a case implicating the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Chairman Antasari Azhar, rock band Slank came to the commission building on Monday to show its support.

“This is a fantastic support from Slank because it is the first (public figure) that came to the KPK to show its support,” KPK deputy chairman for prevention Eko Tjiptadi told a conference here on Monday.

Slank, with its members Kaka, Bimbim, Ridho, Abdee and Ivan, arrived at the commission with their manager Bunda Ifet.

“Fight against corruption shall continue with or without Antasari,” Slank’s drummer Bimbim said.

Last week the public were shocked with news that Antasari might be among the intellectual actors behind the murder of a state owned company’s director Nasruddin Zulkarnaen, who was shot by a drive-by shooting that took place a day earlier as he left the Modernland golf course in Tangerang.

Antasari is summoned by the Jakarta Police Precinct on Monday to be questioned as a witness.

50,000 by Jakarta Post is complete crap. it would not surprise me if they were now down to 25,000 ... but i have no hard evidence for my figures except for late-night whisperings in the Post's newsroom with semi-inebriated production editors.

The identities of the nine suspects are now known. All face the death penalty under the Criminal Code’s Article 340 on premeditated murder. But that probably won’t happen, as the death sentence is theseadays usually reserved for drug smugglers, terrorists and particularly brutal low-income mass-murderers.

The suspects are (in order of biggest to smallest fish):
1. Antasari Azhar: KPK chief.
2. Sigid Haryo Wibisono: Former Golkar Central Java chapter head and chief commissioner of the Harian Merdeka newspaper.
3. Senior Commissioner Wiliardi Wizar: former South Jakarta Police chief.
4. Eduardus Ndopo Mbete (alias Edo): The middle-man who took orders from Wiliardi and then gave orders to the others.
5. Hendrikus Kia Walen: The field coordinator and the recruiter.
6. Daniel: Fired the gun.
7. Heri Santoso: Security coordinator and driver of the motorbike.
8. Fransiskus Tanu Kerans (alias Ansidan alias Amsi): Bought the gun and surveyed the field.
9. Sei: The lookout.

More on all that in a moment...

Kudos to the police for an amazing investigation, getting this far in such a relatively short time. It's almost as if the killing was planned at National Police headquarters...

Well. The word is they it wasn't down to fine police work but rather that suspects 6 through 9 got cold feet, feared for their lives and handed themselves in for protection.

Another version is that they weren't paid.

Chronology (taken from detikcom)
Police seem to have done well in investigating the shooting. They started with statements from witnesses at the scene of the shooting, and then tracked down Heri Santosa, the driver of the bike used in the killing.

Heri gave police the names of some of the others involved in the crime. The subsequent arrests led police to three big fish: police commissioner Wiliardi Wizar, PT Pers Indonesia Merdeka commissioner Sigid Haryo Wibisnono and KPK chairman Antasari Azhar.

Here are 13 stages of the investigation that led police to Antasari (who was apparently being blackmailed by Nasrudin, who had evidence of Antasari screwing Rani the caddie in a hotel room).

1. A man named Sarwin, who was only 5 meters away from Nasrudin’s car when the shooting occurred, gave police detailed descriptions of the assailants. Forensics police also investigated the scene of the crime. Police ascertained the killers used a blue Yamaha Scorpio motorbike. Thanks to Sarwin’s descriptions, police were able to produce sketches of the two men on the bike.

2. Police distributed the sketches to police stations. A man resembling the sketch of the motorbike driver, Heri Santosa, was found in Menteng Atas, Setiabudi, South Jakarta. Police checked his residence, found a blue Yamaha Scorpio there and arrested him.

3. Heri Santosa told police he drove the motorbike, while Daniel sat on the back and fired two shots through the back-left window of Nasrudin’s silver BMW approximately 900 meters away from the Modernland Golf Course at about 2pm on March 14. Heri said a man named Hendrikus Kia Walen had recruited he and Daniel to carry out the killing.

4. Hendrikus Kia Walen was then arrested in Menteng Atas, Central Jakarta. His house was only about 50 meters away from Heri Santosa’s house (although apparently just over the delimitation between Central and South Jakarta). Hendrikus confirmed that Heri and Daniel had been on the motorbike while Fransiskus (the surveyor) and Sei (the lookout) were in a Toyota Avanza vehicle. Hendrikus said Edo paid him Rp400 million for the killing. He said the money was split thus: Rp70 million for Heri Santoso, Rp70 million for Daniel, Rp30 million for Fransiskus, and Rp20 million for Sei. That means the four guys in the field got a total of Rp190 million. Hendrikus said the remaining Rp210 million was for him and to cover operational costs of Rp100 million.

5. Hendrikus told police the weapon used in the shooting was a .38 caliber revolver, which had been loaded with 6 bullets, 2 of which were fired. Police found the gun buried in the front yard of a house in Tebet, South Jakarta. The bullets in the gun matched those taken from Nasrudin’s body.

6. Fransiskus was arrested at Batuceper in Kalideres, West Jakarta. In addition to his Rp30 million payment for taking part in the crime, he also received operational funds of Rp15 million from Hendrikus to buy the gun and Rp5 million to rent the Avanza.

7. Daniel was arrested at Tanjung Priok Port when disembarking from a ship docking from Flores. Daniel admits receiving Rp70 million to shoot Nasrudin.

8. Hendrikus told police that Eduardus Ndopo Mbete (alias Edo) had given him the order (and money) to kill Nasrudin. Police then arrested Edo at his house on Jl Jati Asih in Bekasi.

9. Edo told police he had been acting under orders from Senior Commissioner (police) Wiliardi Wizar. Wiliardi had instructed a man named Jerry to find him someone to organize the killing of Nasrudin. Jerry thus introduced Edo to Wiliardi at Halai Bowling in Ancol. Jerry was arrested at Perumahan Permata Buana in West Jakarta.

10. Jerry said that at the bowling venue meeting, Wiliardi promised to pay Edo Rp500 million. Wilardi also gave Edo photographs of Nasrudin and his car.

11. Edo told police he later received the Rp500 million from Wiliardi at the Citos carpark in South Jakarta. Acting on information from Edo and Jerry, police arrested Wiliardi at Taman Ubud in Lippo Karawaci, Tangerang.

12. Wiliardi told police the money that he gave Edo had come from Sigid Haryo Wibisono, with the knowledge of Antasari Ashar. That’s because Sigid telephoned Antasari - when he delivered the money to Wiliardi - to inform him the operational funds had been handed over. Police on April 28 arrested Sigid at Jl Pati Unus 35 in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta.

13. Wiliardi and Sigid told police that Antasari Azhar had ordered the hit on Nasrudin. They said Nasrudin had often terrorized and blackmailed Antasari with a threat to publicly expose that he'd had sex with Rani at Hotel Gran Mahakam in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta, in May 2008.

A police source has confirmed that Antasari Azhar and Rhani Juliani did indeed “meet” at Hotel Gran Mahakam.

The police source told detikcom that during the course of his seven-hour interrogation today, Antasari admitted to meeting Rhani at the five-star hotel in Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta. "He confessed to meeting Rhani in GM Room 802."

So what sort of evidence of the hotel sex romp was Nasrudin using to blackmail Antasari? And will this evidence (photos or handphone video or ?) end up on the internet? I wonder if Antasari has a big dick?

Comments made by Antasari on Sunday evening indicated he knew he was going to be locked up. He also mentioned some of the many requests made by Nasrudin (who was apparently blackmailing him).

Antasari said he first met Nasrudin not long after becoming KPK head in December 2007. He said Nasrudin came to him to report on corruption in state-owned firm PT Rajawali Nusantara Indonesia (RNI). Nasrudin apparently asked Antasari for a lot of favors (the sort of favors you might ask if you were blackmailing someone). First, he wanted Antasari to get him promoted to the position of human resources director of RNI. He also requested assistance to facilitate a nickel mining project run by state-owned mining firm Antam in Kendari, Southeast Sulawesi. Antasari said Nasrudin had even asked him to give KPK jobs to his relatives. “But I denied all those requests."

Aware of his imminent arrest, Antasari told the reporters: "I understand that you all want to ask me so many questions, yes, because perhaps after tomorrow you will have difficulties questioning me.”

He admitted to knowing one of the murder suspects, Sigid Haryo Wibisono, but denied they were old friends or had met in Yogyakarta. He also denied rumors that Sigid had asked him to form a special intelligence gathering agency. He claimed their relationship was limited to Sigid’s proposal for a column by KPK in his Harian Merdeka newspaper. Antasari said his occasional telephone contact with Sigid was no grounds for branding him a criminal.

Antasari said he played golf a few times each month, mostly at the Bumi Serpong Damai course near his house. KPK’s code of ethics apparently bans KPK members from golfing with corruption suspects or potential suspects.

‘Rhani Not Pregnant’
Police denied rumors that Rhani (whose nickname is Tika, apparently) is pregnant. Residents of Rhani’s neighborhood – Kampung Kosong in Penang suburb, Tangerang – had claimed she was in the first trimester of pregnancy. Police said Rhani (her name is spelled with an ‘h’ on her ID card) had requested protective custody and was staying at an apartment in an undisclosed location. They said she was safe, healthy and would undergo questioning later.

Rhani’s older brother has left the family home following the murder. His whereabouts are unknown to the press.

The Human Resources director of Modernland Golf Course, Herman Halim, said Nasrudin had been known for his extravagant treatment of Rhani. Halim claimed he once told Nasrudin to remember that he had a wife (two wives actually) and kids. He said Nasrudin had been a member of the course for about 5 or 6 years and played there about once every three weeks; whereas he only saw Antasari play there once. Halim denied Rhani had been officially employed by the course, saying she had freelanced there in caddying and then marketing.

30 Celebrity Lawyers – All Free
Indonesia’s celebrity lawyers – those best known for representing villainous generals, crooked politicians and the Suharto clan (but I repeat myself) – have been queuing up to represent Antasari, apparently pro bono.

Those on the legal team include: Hotman Sitompoel, Mohamad Assegaf, Ari Yusuf Amir, Juniver Girsang, Deni Kailimang and Farhat Abbas, Maqdir Ismail, Hotman Sitompoel and Sugito. Ari Yusif Amir said they had decided to represent Antasari free of charge because they sympathized with his plight. "Antasari could not possibly could pay all of them," he said, adding the team is yet to choose a chairman.

Just in case the lawyers have a change of heart, KPK has warned that it will not be footing Antasari’s legal costs because his case is a “personal matter”.

The lawyers were swarming at Jakarta Police headquarters on Monday but their calls for Antasari’s detention to be postponed (they argued there was no evidence and no motive) fell on deaf ears.

Killing was Second Attempt
The lawyer representing the field-level suspects (Edo, Hendrikus, Daniel, Heri Santoso, Fransiskus and Sei) said the shooting of Nasrudin on March 14 was actually the second attempt on his life. Lawyer Petrus Balla Pattyona said the first attempt was made approximately two weeks’ earlier, when Nasrudin was being driven to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport. He said the attempt failed because “the situation was not right”.

Petrus denied rumors that all of the field-level suspects were from Flores (island in eastern Indonesia). He said they were “ordinary” people who had been led astray because they were told that Nasrudin was an enemy of the state and must be eliminated as a matter of national duty. He also said his clients had been threatened with death if they failed to carry out the killing.

The lawyer said his clients believed the killing had been authorized by police. That’s because whenever they had telephoned Hendrikus, he always told them he was at National Police headquarters. They also believed the meeting that plotted the murder might have taken place at National Police headquarters. Petrus said Hendrikus mentioned National Police headquarters when he made a phone call on the day of the killing. "Furthermore, during the indoctrination [of the recruits] it was always said that their mission was to defend the state.”

Petrus said Edo was good friends with a police officer. The suspects were convinced of this when they received their share of a Rp500 million payment from a man in uniform. The suspects also were driven about in a police patrol car.

Photographs? Snap, Snap!
Antasari was interrogated by police for seven hours, during which he was asked 24 questions. Police then said they had sufficient evidence (in the form of documents, photographs and witness statements) to detain him as a suspect. Photos? Could these be compromising photos of Antasari with Rhani?

Evidence against the other suspects includes a gun, 6 bullets, 2 bullet shells, money (Rp50,000 notes), a motorbike, a helmet and mobile phones.

Antasari is now detained in Block A10 of the Narcotics Detention Center at Jakarta Police headquarters.

He had plenty of high-profile supporters, including the band Slank. Movie star Anwar Fuadi also dropped by at Jakarta Police headquarters, saying he was a relative of Antasari and wanted to show his support. "I’m certain Antasari was not involved. He is good and his family is good too.”

Just in case the lawyers have a change of heart, KPK has warned that it will not be footing Antasari’s legal costs because his case is a “personal matter”.

yep, you can't get more personal than murder.

has anyone noticed yet, but i think antasari is trying to set up a defence that he merely mentioned his difficulties to Sigid, and the implications for several golkar figures, and that Sigid took it upon himself to "solve" the problem.

HA!!! what a sordid affair this is turning out to be! seems like an awful lot of trouble just for some golf caddie ...

and an excellent report, ken!

My highbrow addition to this story is that a couple of months back I hung out for a night with a girl named Rani at Stadium. She was a golf caddy, not really very cute but there were drugs involved so my judgement was somewhat impaired. She smsed me a few times afterwards, which I ignored. I'm going to try & reply now & see if by any chance it is the same person (although as I hazily recall, she said she lived near Bogor.)

those helpful folk at detik.com like to be comprehensive about the information they publish about people, right down to their blood pressure, home address and KTP number:

the number plate of the vehicle that escorted her to the safe-house apartment is not yet know.

detik.com provides even more seemingly irrelevant detail on the lass:

basically, the gal isn't the brightest kid on the block. highest marks were for "Religious Practice", 8.0. which is a tad ironic ...

Funny you should say that, I think you're both right. She did ask for taxi money, the cheeky little snot, although we were just hanging out in the club. The update is that my sms hasn't been returned, so a bit inconclusive there as to whether she's "the" Rani. Although I note the love-triangle Rani has a different nickname anyway.

Rhani Juliani seems to refer to herself as Rani (without the H). probably got bored explaining to people that there was a silent H in her name.

According to a source quoted by The Jakarta Globe, Rhani took photos of her hotel room sex romp with Antasari. Nasrudin then used the photos to blackmail Antasari.

Lawyer Says Nasrudin Killed on Attempt No. 2
Nivell Rayda
The Jakarta Globe
May 5, 2009

The alleged killing of businessman Nasrudin Zulkarnaen was the second attempt on his life by the same group of hitmen, said a lawyer representing five of the accused on Tuesday.

“They tried to kill him several weeks before [the actual murder] by bumping into Nasrudin’s car on his way to the [Soekarno-Hatta International Airport], hoping that the victim would step out of the car. However, Nasrudin told his driver to flee,” Slamet Situmorang told The Jakarta Globe.

Slamet is representing Eduardus Ndopo Mbete, Hendrikus Kia Walen, Daniel Daen, Heri Santoso and Fransiskus Tadon Keran, who have been arrested for the murder of Nasrudin.

The director of PT Putra Rajawali Banjaran was shot twice in the head by two men on a Yamaha Scorpio motorcycle after playing at the Modernland Golf Course in Tangerang, Banten, on March 14.

The case has sparked nationwide interest as the police named the chief of the much respected Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Antasari Azhar, as the mastermind of the murder.

Eduardus is suspected to be the middleman who received instructions from Williardi Wizar, a former South Jakarta Police chief. Hendrikus is said to be the one who purchased the murder weapon, Fransiskus monitored Nasrudin’s moves, Heri was the driver of the motorcycle and Daniel allegedly fired the fatal shots.

“The five are security guards at different places. The rogue police officer told Eduardus that the victim was an enemy of the state and that he was a threat to the legislative election [on April 9],” the lawyer said, adding that the five were hesitant at first but later gave in, fearing for their lives.

“The one giving them instructions [Williardi] was a police officer. If they didn’t do as the officer said, it was very likely that it would spell doom for them,” Slamet said. “They were never told who was behind the murder and what the real motive was.”

Police have arrested a total of 10 men as a suspects, including Antasari and the five.

There have been many rumors about the murder, the most prominent being that it stemmed from an alleged love triangle involving Antasari, Nasrudin and Rani Juliani, a female golf caddy.

However, an anonymous police source told major news organizations — including The Jakarta Globe — that one year prior, Nasrudin had tricked Antasari into sleeping with Rani, whom Nasrudin had secretly married. Nasrudin told Rani to take photos of the two together in order to extort money from Antasari and have the antigraft chief in his pocket, the source said.

Boyamin Saiman, lawyer for the Nasrudin family, neither confirmed nor denied the source’s remarks, saying that the theory was “possible.” However, he acknowledged that the family had submitted photos of Antasari and Rani together to the police as evidence and confirmed that these were taken by Rani. He would not say whether these were directly related to the murder investigation.

The Jakarta Police on Monday would not confirm whether they had received the photos.

They would only say that they had the evidence they needed to complete the case file and forward it to the Attorney General’s Office.
---------------------------------------

Another report by the Globe explains the role played by Fransiskus in the killing: He drove the rented Toyota Avanza in front of Nasrudin's BMW to slow him down and give the gunman an easier target.

It's a sad day for journalism when JakChat is quoted in a serious report.

The Crimebuster and the Caddy
Asia Sentinel Asia Sentinel
Tuesday, 05 May 2009

Indonesia has been absolutely agog for nearly a week over allegations that the chief of what arguably is the country’s most-respected public institution, the Corruption Eradication Commission, ordered the gangland-style slaying of a business executive who police say was his rival for the sexual favors of a female golf caddy.

Antasari Azhar, 56, who heads what is known widely here as the KPK, was arrested Monday and named by police as “the mastermind” in the March 14 murder of Nasrudin Zulkarnaen, the 41-year-old head of a state-owned pharmaceutical company. Two gunmen on motorbikes flanked Nasrudin’s car and shot him in the head as he was leaving the Modernland Golf Course outside Jakarta, where 23-year-old Rani Juliani had once been a caddy.

Rani, who is said to have been Nasrudin's mistress and also the lover of Antasari, is now under police protection.

Nasrudin’s lawyer, Bonyamin Saiman, told a news conference shortly after Antasari was named by the police that his client’s murder was likely to have been sparked by an affair. “It is suspected that the motive is a love triangle. A mistress of Mr Nasrudin also had special relations with Antasari Azhar,” Bonyamin said.

To say the stories have been lurid is an understatement. The real-life drama makes the country's cinetron soap operas pale by comparison. Nine people have been jailed so far on allegations of complicity at every level from Antasari to the hit men. Some reports indicate gunmen tried to rub out Nasrudin on the way to Jakarta's airport before they finally got him at the golf course entrance.

The country’s leaky law enforcement agencies have been rattling media walls with tales of confessions, videos of sexual activity and a possible honey trap sprung on Antasari by Nasrudin with the apparent cooperation of the beautiful Rani.

According to some accounts, Nasrudin, a political appointee to the state pharma company with no executive experience, had surreptitiously filmed the anti-graft czar in bed with his caddy lover and planned to use it against him. Other accounts say still pictures have surfaced of the tryst.

Beyond the sheer wonder of how a man in Antasari's position could end up in such an amazing tangle of intrigue is the very real political fallout that could result from the crime. While Antasari is not known to b a close ally of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyo, the corruption watchdog agency is a vital part of his appeal to voters in a reelection year with claims that he is busy ridding the country of sleaze and graft.

Stand By Your Man
But without a doubt it is the sex and the sizzle that is selling the story in Jakarta.

Businessmen plying Indonesia’s golf courses routinely notice that beautiful young women, like Rani, are employed as caddies — and they are not just there to hand over the sand wedge for a tough bunker shot. In fact their presence — they even wink and wave to golfers as they pull up to a course, as if they were bar hostesses — might go some distance towards explaining the phenomenal popularity of a slow-moving game played in the blazing tropical sun by wealthy middle-aged men. According to the JakChat Blog’s version of events, which is described as “hastily plagiarized and maybe wildly inaccurate,” Rani was a top caddy “and had many bookings, mostly by state officials, who were known to tip generously. Some of the course’s top caddies could charge up to Rp500,000 (US$47.45) for a round (of golf), but Rani was the most expensive, able to charge Rp1 million.”

Antasari’s wife, Ida Laksmiwati, is standing by the accused, however, appearing on television Sunday to denounce the allegations and say they were a result of Antasari’s high-profile leadership of the anti-corruption agency.

“This kind of situation is a common occurrence for my husband,” Laksmiwati told reporters. “Whatever happens to my husband, I have faith in him. I believe everything he says.”

What Happens to the Agency?
The jailing has also raised immediate concerns among reform activists who say the KPK must maintain or even increase its level of activity. Acivists held an impromptu rally at the KPK headquarters on Monday, even drawing a rock n roll band called Slank to the festivities.

“We are like cheerleaders supporting the KPK’s fight against corruption,” said Adnan Topan Husodo, deputy for political affairs at Indonesian Corruption Watch, Monday. “The KPK is now facing a terrible ordeal, and we want the KPK to maintain and increase the level of success it has had and prove that the [murder] case will not slow them down,” he said.

Antasari’s duties have been taken over by four deputies who have pledged to continue operations against government-linked corruption. Set up in 2003 in the dying days of the Megawati Sukarnoputri presidency, the agency has surprised the country with its high-profile pursuit of offenders who have been hauled off to jail.

While some critics say Antasari has played favorites and deliberately stayed away from some big cases, hardly a day goes by without the newspapers reporting on yet another luckless politician or businessman who has been dragged into the dock. The KPK has arrested and prosecuted successfully nine members of parliament, a former national police chief, three ambassadors, a senior prosecutor and three central bank officials including the former governor, Burhanuddin Abdullah, as well as the bank’s deputy governor, and has reclaimed a scorching Rp3 trillion (US$284 billion) in ill-gotten gains, a KPK official told Asia Sentinel.

It has played a major role in the public perception of Yudhoyono as a political reformer, despite the fact that the body is not responsible to either the government or parliament.

It also seems to have functioned largely independently of Antasari himself, who was appointed chairman of the KPK in 2007 by the House of Representatives, then dominated by the corruption-wracked Golkar Party, the former legislative pet rock for the late President Suharto, who was deposed in 1998.

Anti-corruption activists accuse Antasari of having a less than stellar career as a public prosecutor in the Attorney General’s Office, including having facilitated the temporary 2000 disappearance of Hutomo “Tommy” Mandala Putra, Suharto’s son, after Tommy was sentenced to 18 months in jail for corruption. But Antasari later turned on the office attorney general’s office, with a hard-hitting KPK probe that resulted in the jailing of three prosecutors.

Antasari’s swift arrest, some say, may even be an act of vengeance by the attorney general’s office. Indeed, the attorney general's office jumped the gun and announced their former colleague's suspect status with what appeared to be ill-concealed glee last week, despite the fact that it was up to the police, not prosecutors, to make such an announcement.

Many members of the House of Representatives and others who could face the broad powers of the KPK would like nothing better than to emasculate the unit. The arrest of the boss could add fuel to that fire. Although the KPK is a permanent body that can’t be wiped out, enabling legislation is now before the House to maintain the special court that handles KPK cases.

“We are very worried about that,” Haryano Umar, the KPK’s deputy chairman, told Asia Sentinel. “The legislation is still at the parliament, and they are working on it, discussing it, and hopefully it will be released by the end of the year. If it is not, we will have a big problem.”

Indonesia’s regular courts, widely regarded as corrupt, have a conviction rate of less than half their cases. The KPK has convicted every miscreant it has dragged before the special court.

Will the agency be able to function with its chairman in jail? Haryano says it’s not a problem. The duties will be rotated among the remaining four deputies. Currently, decisions to prosecute suspects are taken “collegially and collectively,” Haryano says, so that no single deputy can stop or start a prosecution.

As to public perceptions, he says, “I don’t think there is a big impact. I think so far the public is with us.”

Indeed. Indonesia’s anti-corruption activists say that with Antasari out of the way, the KPK can now begin to go after the really big fish. For instance, they say, there are the bankers who fled to Singapore in the wake of the Asian Financial Crisis with tens of billions of dollars in funds meant to recapitalize the country’s then-failed banks. They have never been prosecuted.

In the meantime, there will almost certainly be more revelations in a case that seems likely to turn into a form of long-running national theatre. There will be a trial to follow, testimony from the golf caddy and certainly some explanation from Antasari himself at some point.

And those pictures from the hotel, if they exist. Don't forget the pictures.

Arrest of Antasari Azhar won't hit Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's chances
Stephen Fitzpatrick, Jakarta correspondent
The Australian | May 06, 2009

THE arrest of Indonesia's anti-corruption tsar over a murder will have little impact on President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono's re-election campaign, analysts say.

This is despite crime fighter Antasari Azhar having been a poster boy for the President.

"Corruption is important but, really, the things that are most important are the costs of basic needs, things in relation to poverty," commentator Sunny Tanuwidjaja, from the Centre for Strategic and International Studies, said yesterday.

And members of an Indonesian elite class who might see Mr Azhar's arrest as reflecting poorly on the President's anti-corruption drive were unlikely to have a big influence on the election result, he added.

"Maybe intellectuals will make the connection, but the ordinary people, they will look to (the success of) programs such as the BLT and BOS (cash handouts for the poor and a school funding program)," he said.

Mr Azhar will face as-yet-unspecified charges relating to the shooting of businessman Nasrudin Zulkarnaen as he left a Jakarta golf course in March. Mr Azhar was arrested on Monday night.

Indonesian media has speculated over a love triangle involving Mr Azhar, Nasrudin and his third wife, golf caddie Rani Juliani. It has been suggested that Mr Azhar was set up over the murder, with evidence reportedly including the secret filming of a sex tape involving him and Ms Juliani in a south Jakarta hotel.

Police are expected to allege that Mr Azhar organised Nasrudin's murder to stop the businessman revealing the affair.

Mr Azhar has denied any wrongdoing, and Mr Tanuwidjaja said the affair could, ironically, end up strengthening the Corruption Eradication Commission, of which, until last Friday, Mr Azhar was head.

"There is positive and negative in this," Mr Tanuwidjaja said. "Questions could be asked about the institution's credibility, but the way it handles this, the fact it has asked him to step down, could show that it is quite credible and transparent."

Political scientist Syamsuddin Haris predicted little electoral impact from the scandal, saying the Corruption Eradication Commission was "an independent institution".

The presidential poll, slated for July 8, looks like being a showdown between Mr Yudhoyono, his deputy, Jusuf Kalla, and either former president Megawati Sukarnoputri or her new ally, retired military strongman Prabowo Subianto.

Ms Megawati and Mr Prabowo have done a deal to run a joint ticket but have yet to announce which of them will get top billing on it.

Ms Megawati's Indonesian Democratic Party for Struggle, which won up to 15 per cent of the vote in last month's parliamentary poll, has a solid enough constituency but Mr Prabowo has a family fortune worth billions of dollars to call on.

Mr Yudhoyono confirmed that he had already decided on a running mate but says he will not make his selection known until after results in the parliamentary poll are declared on Saturday.

Having made a clear break with Mr Kalla's Golkar party, Mr Yudhoyono now has the option of selecting a political professional or technocrat for his ticket rather than relying on party affiliation.

And despite predictions that the recent rearranging of Indonesian politics will push him into the arms of Islamist parties to regain office, Mr Yudhoyono looks likely to win with an even bigger mandate.

The Jakarta Post's Endy Bayuni doesn't seem to realize there are no good guys in the Antasari-Nasrudin case. Endy also seems to have overlooked reports that Nasrudin was killed because he was blackmailing Antasari.

When the hunter becomes the hunted

Endy M. Bayuni, The Jakarta Post , 05/06/2009

The loneliest man in Indonesia today is not President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono nor his estranged vice president Jusuf Kalla, but Antasari Azhar, the chairman of the anti-corruption commission, the KPK.

The man hailed as a hero for much of the past year for hunting down big-time corruptors and for seeing them all to jail — the KPK has a 100 percent record of ensuring convictions — is now under police custody on charges of murder. Just to make sure that he is safe from those who want to avenge him, he is being held in the same detention center as people charged with drug-related offences rather than with corruption suspects.

The National Police and the Attorney General’s Office are pursuing the case with such zeal to the point of overstepping their authority. This was illustrated when the police summoned Antasari for questioning as a witness, while the Attorney General’s Office had already declared his status as a murder suspect as early as Friday. Police elevated his status in the investigation to suspect after seven hours of questioning Monday.

Both state institutions had a field day in publicly disclosing Antasari’s connection to the murder, with their officers trying — not convincingly — not to appear smug. Exploiting the media was the style Antasari and his KPK used with deadly effect in pursuing celebrated corruption cases. In facing suspects with powerful connections, the KPK successfully solicited the support of the main media in the country. Now he seems to be getting a taste of his own bitter medicine.

Antasari, himself a former senior official at the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) before he was elected to join the powerful KPK last year, has obviously created many enemies in his line of work. His victims have included former colleagues in the law enforcement agencies. He relentlessly pursued the case against Urip Tri Gunawan, a senior AGO officer, and also one or two police generals for good measure.

He endeared himself to President Yudhoyono when the KPK in 2008 pressed corruption charges against Aulia Pohan, the father-in-law of the president’s son. Aulia’s case is still being heard in the Corruption Court, but the timing of his court hearing could not have been more fortunate, with Yudhoyono facing an election this year.

For good measure, the House of Representatives, which is also filled with corruption scandals, is seeking to amend the law that created the KPK in order to clip its powers. To suggest that many people rejoiced at Antasari’s arrest is probably an understatement.

It’s good to hear that the other members of the commission have taken the initiative to suspend him and to rotate the chairmanship in his absence.

We don’t think the murder case would in any way affect the work or the public standing of the commission. While leadership is important, the KPK as an institution has always been bigger than its chairman. As far as the people are concerned, the KPK show must go on, meaning hunting down big-time corruption must continue, even in the absence of Antasari.

The police accuse Antasari of playing a major role in planning the murder of businessman Nasruddin Zulkarnaen in March. Nasruddin was killed in a drive-by shooting in Tangerang, outside Jakarta.

News stories emerging from the case, obviously leaked by investigators, suggest that Antasari had an affair with a caddie who was the third wife of Nasruddin.

How exactly Antasari was involved is something police have yet to disclose, but for them to go this far suggests they have a strong case against him. They also said that his involvement was serious enough that he could receive the death penalty or a life sentence if convicted.

Antasari is not as alone as it seems. His wife has stood by him in several press conferences before Monday’s arrest, publicly declaring her faith in him. And he has recruited the services of 10 top-notch lawyers to help him with his legal defense.

Is Antasari a hero or a villain?

Watch the drama unfold. Not even John Grisham could have written such a powerful story. At this stage, nobody knows how it will end. Let’s hope that as with all great novels, the good guys, and not the bad ones, win.

Here's the Ranster!!

A graduate golf caddie ay? An ignominious fate indeed, however I’m sure that getting to grips with old Nasrudin’s “club” could have fast tracked her to more lucrative work.

PDI-P chief implicated in graft case

The Jakarta Post , Jakarta | Tue, 05/12/2009 9:21 AM | Headlines

The Corruption Court heard Monday that a portion of embezzled funds taken from a state-owned company were given to then president Megawati Soekarnoputri in 2003, reports indicate.

According to news services, a suspect told the court that Megawati received Rp 500 million ($48,000) from PT Rajawali Nusantara Indonesia (RNI).

“The money was used to fund a political party’s campaign in Yogyakarta in 2003,” the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation’s (YLBHI) news portal www.primaironline.com quoted RNI former finance director Ranendra Dangin as saying to the antigraft court.

A source at Monday’s graft trial confirmed Ranendra’s testimony.

Ranendra did not specify whether the money went to Megawati’s personal account or the coffers of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P).

A law forbids state enterprises from donating to any political parties.

Ranendra was named a suspect by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) for the misappropriation of a total Rp 4.5 billion (US$440,000) allocated for the purchase of sugar from 2001 until 2004.

The case was part of a major corruption scandal reported to the KPK by Nasruddin Zulkarnaen, director of state-owned pharmaceutical firm PT Putra Rajawali Banjaran, (PRB) which is a subsidiary of RNI.

Nasruddin was shot dead on March 14, 2009, in an incident linked to the RNI graft case and a love triangle involving himself, golf caddy Rani Jazuli and suspended KPK chairman Antasari Azhar, who was recently arrested on murder charges.

Police said Monday the investigation into Nasruddin’s murder had been expanded to include corruption scandals implicating RNI.

“We have been collecting evidence and legal facts to investigate this case. Any reasonable motive we find, not just that involving the love drama, will be pursued,” Jakarta Police spokesman Adj. Sr. Comr. Chrysnanda Dwi Laksana told The Jakarta Post.

National Police chief Gen. Bambang Hendarso Danuri said last week the motive for murder was not solely connected to the widely-reported love affair.

It was believed Nasruddin may have had evidence surrounding several cases before he was murdered, his lawyer Boyamin Saiman said.

“Nasruddin was an ambitious lobbyist. He stood a real chance of becoming RNI’s director but failed,” Boyamin said. “Nasruddin became angry and began to blackmail everybody, possibly including Antasari because he ignored Nasruddin’s reports of corruption.“

KPK deputy chief for corruption prevention Haryono Umar said Nasruddin had indeed reported many corruption cases to the commission, but denied the majority were not followed up.

Last week, Antasari’s wife Ida Laksmiwati submitted documents to the police on corruption cases that Nasruddin had forwarded to Antasari, mostly related to RNI.

“The biggest and most threatening corruption case that Nasruddin kept was the sale of RNI’s sugar cane processing plant in Gorontalo in 2003,” Boyamin said.

“The case involved many top officials at the time and Nasruddin had the evidence,” he added, refusing to mention any names.

Ari Yusuf Amir, one of Antasari’s lawyers, said the facts surrounding the 2003 scandal involving RNI’s Gorontalo plant were included in the documents.

Ari said the documents had been taken from Antasari’s home, not from the KPK office. “The KPK have the copies,” he said, denying Antasari withheld the reports by keeping them at home.

Meanwhile, Jakarta Police chief detective Sr. Comr. Iriawan said he had asked the Indonesia Financial Transaction Reports Analysis Center (PPATK) to trace financial transactions between the three murder suspects: Antasari, media magnate Sigid Haryo Wibisono and former South Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Wiliardi Wizar. (bbs)

PDI-P Denies Illegal Campaign Funding

The Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) on Tuesday rejected a claim made by a state-owned company official on trial for corruption that it had received campaign funding from an illegal source.

Ranendra Dangin, the former chief financial officer of state-owned company Rajawali Nusantara Indonesia, told the Anti-Corruption Court on Monday during his trial that RNI had made a contribution of Rp 500 million ($48,000) to PDI-P’s chairwoman, former President Megawati Sukarnoputri, during her re-election campaign in 2004.

The donation, Ranendra said, was recorded in RNI’s financial reports.

According to the Election Law, it is illegal for presidential and legislative candidates, as well as political parties, to receive funding from state-owned companies.

PDI-P secretary general Pramono Anung on Tuesday denied Ranendra’s claim.

“We want Ranendra to prove his claims,” he said. “All of PDI-P’s campaign funds, including Megawati’s, were audited, transparent and came from legitimate sources.”

Pramono added that in 2004, he personally managed Megawati’s re-election campaign and had access to all the details of the campaign funds. “There were no donations from RNI or any other illegal sources,” he said.

A member of PDI-P’s advisory committee and husband of Megawati, Taufik Kiemas, said that he did not know if RNI made donations to PDI-P that year.

Prosecutors from the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) allege that Ranendra embezzled Rp 4.6 billion — the majority of which came from an escrow account belonging to RNI and its subsidiary, Mitra Ogan — transferring the money to his personal account in 2004. He labeled the money as tax penalties and administration
fees.

The account was opened in 2001 after RNI and Bulog, the state logistics company, were granted monopoly rights over the importation of high-quality refined sugar. RNI subcontracted part of the project to Mitra Ogan, which is involved in the sugar industry.
