Crime of Passion over Sexy Caddie?

The following is all hastily plagiarized (and may be wildly inaccurate) with the futile aim of trying to make sense of contradictory information in media reports. Hopefully the media will have correct information and more details next week.

Political machinations ahead of July’s presidential election have dominated the news over recent weeks. But all that crap about Kalla-Wiranto and whether Megawati’s daughter Puan will become Prabowo Subianto’s running mate is now being overshadowed by a massive scandal.

This big news is that Antasari Azhar, the country’s top anti-graft official, is suspected of masterminding the recent murder of Nasrudin Zulkarnaen, the director of a state-owned pharmaceutical company.

The Attorney General’s Office on Friday (1/5/09) named Antasari a suspect, but police on Saturday said he is only classified as a witness at this stage.

Antasari and Nasrudin were reported to have first met while discussing a corruption case and then became golfing buddies. Golf courses have long been a favored location for corrupt state prosecutors, court officials and corruption suspects to negotiate bribes without fear of being bugged.

There are conflicting claims over the motive for the killing: Some reports say Nasrudin was killed to prevent him from testifying in a corruption case. Others claim the murder was a crime of passion because Antasari and Nasrudin were screwing the same young female golf caddie. Reports have described the caddie as Nasrudin’s “third wife” although apparently the two were not officially married. There is talk that Nasrudin had filmed Antasari having sex with the caddy and had threatened to release the footage. Another version is that the killing was conducted with the sole aim of making Antasari a suspect because powerful people feared his anti-corruption investigations.

The media has said those involved in the murder included Antasari, as well as Sigid Haryo Wibisono (a former Golkar Party official and owner of the Harian Merdeka newspaper), a military figure (or a thug-for-hire) who served in East Timor and a senior police officer.

Here’s some background on the case:

Antasari Azhar
He is scum. He was controversially made head of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in December 2007 after a tarnished career as a state prosecutor the Attorney General’s Office. When former dictator Suharto’s youngest son Tommy was sentenced to 18 months’ in jail for corruption in 2000, it was Antasari’s job to take Tommy to jail. Antasari instead allowed Tommy to go into hiding. Antasari has been accused of allowing other villains to get away with corruption. He is reported to have handed out bribes to journalists. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono did not personally appoint Antasari as head of KPK. Instead he was “elected” to the job by parliament’s 49-member commission on law and legal affairs. His election was due to intensive lobbying by Golkar and PDIP, which presumably wanted a pliable person at the helm of KPK. Since taking on the job, Antasari has led a series of investigations into corrupt prosecutors at the Attorney General’s Office, causing much embarrassment and shame.

Thus the Attorney General’s Office was quick to declare Antasari a murder suspect, even though under the Indonesian legal system, the police and the KPK have the authority to declare people to be suspects (whereas the Attorney General’s Office is supposed to formally charge suspects with crimes, based on police recommendations). Regardless, Antasari has had to temporarily step down from his position pending the investigation. The Attorney General's Office has instructed Immigration to ban him from leaving the country.

Nasrudin Zulkarnaen
Originally from Makassar, the capital of South Sulawesi province. He was the president director of PT Putra Rajawali Banjaran (PRB), a pharmaceutical subsidiary of PT Mitra Rajawali Banjaran, which is itself a subsidiary of state-owned PT Rajawali Nusantara Indonesia (RNI). RNI is involved in the agricultural, pharmaceutical, trade and distribution sectors. According to a report in The Jakarta Globe, Nasrudin was appointed head of PRB for political reasons and had no prior experience in the pharmaceutical industry. He was shot in the head on March 14 and died the following day.

Nasrudin had two wives. The first, named Sri Martuti, lives in Bekasi with their one child. The second wife (whom he married in 1999) is named Arinda Irawati and lives in Tangerang with their two children. In addition to the two wives, Nasruddin was rumored to have taken a sexy young golf caddie as his third wife. More on her a bit further down.

Ranendra Dangin
He was the finance director of PRB’s holding company, RNI. He arrested by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) on January 8, 2009, for allegedly embezzling Rp4.5 billion ($376,000) in proceeds from the refined sugar import monopoly controlled by RNI in cooperation with the National Logistics Agency (Bulog) over 2001-04. Ranendra's trial commenced on March 30 at the Anti-Corruption Court in Jakarta.

Rhani Juliani: The Sexy Caddie
Several reports have claimed that 22-year-old Rhani is Nasrudin’s third wife, though other reports say the two were never married. Rhani worked first as a caddie and then as a “marketing officer” at Modernland Golf Course in Tangerang, Banten province. She was expensive and had many bookings, mostly by state officials, who were known to tip generously. Some of the course’s top caddies could charge up to Rp500,000 for a round (of golf), but Rhani was the most expensive, able to charge Rp1 million. Nasrudin was a member of Modernland Golf Course. Antasari also often played there.

Rhani left the golf course last year, apparently after Nasrudin offered to look after her financially. Nasrudin was close to Rani’s family and last year invited them on a holiday to Bali. Nasrudin funded Rani’s studies at the Raharja Institute of Information Management and Computers in Tangerang.

Not much has been seen of Rhani since her sugar daddy was murdered. She and her parents have moved out of the family house in Tangerang. Rhani reportedly scarpered to Serang to stay with her grandparents. She had been questioned by police a few times in March after the killing.

Corruption Angle
Nasrudin’s brother Andi Syamsuddin said police should question the victim’s two wives – not because he suspected them – but because they must know something. He said Nasrudin had confided in him that he was worried about PRB’s “worsening plight”, so the family suspected that someone senior in the parent company might be involved in the murder.

No doubt Nasrudin would have upset a few people if he had been cooperating with KPK investigators examining the corruption in RNI. The RNI sugar monopoly embezzlement case was initially handled by the police, who never handed it over to prosecutors. The case moved forward only when the KPK took over. The case is the first of three handled by KPK involving RNI, and the only one to reach the prosecution stage thus far.

In 2005, then State-Owned Enterprises Minister Sugiharto reported to the KPK that RNI and its subsidiaries had embezzled more than Rp60 billion in funds.

In 2003, RNI and two of its subsidiaries — a money courier service and a health product importer — were reported by the Health Ministry to the police and the KPK for allegedly embezzling Rp520 billion out of Rp580 billion in funds the ministry had disbursed over a period of five years.

Some reports have said Nasrudin was to have appeared as a witness in Ranendra’s trial. But why would Nasrudin know about the embezzlement involving the sugar imports? Other reports said he knew about the corruption case involving the Health Ministry. RNI officials denied Nasrudin was on the list of witnesses summoned by the KPK.

Antasari Azhar has said Nasrudin had been providing KPK with information on several corruption cases, including the case of Ranendra and the sugar imports.

Brief Chronology of the Killing & Arrests
March 14: Nasrudin Zulkarnaen goes to Modernland Golf Course in Tangerang, Banten province. He plays only two holes before calling his driver at about 2pm and telling him they have to go to his office in Kuningan, Jakarta. Nasrudin gets into the back of the BMW, which starts to drive away. Two men on a Yamaha Scorpio motorbike approach the car as it leaves the main gate; one of the men produces a gun, aims at the window and shoots twice, hitting Nasruddin in the head.

March 15: After being in a coma for 22 hours, Nasrudin dies at Gatot Subroto Army Hospital in Central Jakarta. His two wives then accompany his body on a flight to Makassar for his funeral the next day.

April 27: Jakarta Police arrest the suspected killer, identified only by his initials as D.A.N., at Tanjung Priok Port, North Jakarta. Under interrogation D.A.N. reveals the names of four other people allegedly involved in the killing. Police subsequently arrest these four, who were identified as H.E.R., H.E.N., F.R.A.N. and A.M. They gave police the name of another alleged conspirator, identified only as E.D.

Police said D.A.N., H.E.R., H.E.N., F.R.A.N. and A.M. were assigned as “field operatives” for the killing and the only person they knew in the chain of command was E.D., who had given them orders.

Police arrest E.D., who gives them another name up the chain of command: J.E.

April 29: Police arrest J.E. at dawn at Bumi Serpong Damai in Tangerang. Interrogation of J.E. leads police to another suspect, Sigid Haryo Wibisono (the former head of Golkar Party's Central Java chapter and owner of Harian Merdeka newspaper), who is arrested in Blok A, Kebayoran Baru, South Jakarta. Sigid names another suspect: a former district police chief of Jakarta identified as W.

April 30: Police arrest W. at night at a karaoke bar in Tangerang. Under interrogation, W. tells police the brains behind the murder is Antasari Azhar.

And Now
Antasari’s lawyer, Ari Yusuf Ami, is denying his client was involved in a love triangle with Nasrudin and Rhani Juliani. He dismissed such claims as slander. Asked to comment on allegations that Antasari had sent a threatening SMS to Nasrudin prior to the murder, Ari said it has not been proved the SMS came from Antasari. The text of the SMS was "you know the risk".

The lawyer said Antisari regretted the move by the Attorney General’s Office to declare him a suspect. He said his client is staying at his home in Bumi Serpong Damai for the moment and on Monday will go to Jakarta Police Headquarters for questioning.

The head of Antasari’s legal team, Juniver Girsang, said the KPK leader’s family doesn’t believe he was involved in the murder. The family believes there has been an elaborate plot to discredit Antasari.

Meanwhile, police say they are still looking for two suspects in the murder case. And a lawyer for six of the arrested suspects has denied rumors that his clients are East Timorese.

What Really Happened?
(The following is all speculation and guess-work). Someone went to a lot of effort to kill Nasrudin. Which makes it unlikely the killing was some kind of spontaneous crime of passion. Detikcom has quoted an anonymous law enforcer as saying that Nasrudin was ambitious and wanted to advance his career in state-owned enterprises, so he lobbied KPK (specifically Antasari) to reveal the corruption of his superiors in RNI. The source said Nasrudin used Rhani as "bait" to entrap Antasari. In other words, Nasrudin encouraged Rhani to screw Antasari (and Nasrudin presumably got evidence of their tryst) and then threatened to publicly expose Antasari if the corruption case did not proceed. But Anatasari could not continue with the case because RNI had been funding a major political party (presumably Golkar) to which Antasari himself was indebted. Thus Antasari was in a dilemma - risk prosecuting the company/party that he owed, or risk having his tryst with the caddie exposed. Antasari informed a businessman friend - Sigid Haryo Wibisono (the Golkar guy) - of his problem. Sigid then got in touch with another businessman and a police officer (with the initials W.W.), and the plan was hatched to murder Nasrudin.

Given the high stakes, Nasrudin's brother has urged police to guarantee the safety of the two detained hitmen, due to fears they could be killed (or given death threats) to cover the tracks of the masterminds.

The caddie at the center of the sex-corruption-blackmail-murder-political scandal, Rani Juliani, has two blogs.

1. http://rani-juliani.blogspot.com/
This one has a dodgy radio playing. Her last posts were back in November 2008. Nothing very interesting, except she is suddenly getting a lot of comments, some of them somewhat unkind.

Some of the comments in her shoutbox:
albert: "menurut gue, loe pasti pake magic. tampang loe engga bgt. jelek dan gaya kampung. so u must have a magic spell to attract Mr. N and Mr. AA."

antasari: "hai rani jgn sembunyi dong????,klo aq dthn gmn,nt aq sendirian, trus pelerq aq gmn? di asah dimana? masa lobang wc penjara,kn lbh enk di lobang mu"

Rani Juliani: "Kenapa sih kalian pada sinis? Bebas saja kan saya NGENTOT sama Antasari atw aki2 lain? Meskipun Udah bangkotan tapi masih LIAT Brow!!!"

2. http://ranijuliani.blogspot.com/
There's not much happening on this one except for her brief profile, which is getting a lot of views.

She's also on Facebook, but has not accepted my friend request yet.

Azhar is giving a press conference now.

A belated press conference. Was supposed to be at 10am but Antasari was "still asleep". Yeah, right. Expect a massive cover-up if the hit on Nasrudin really was ordered by Golkar.

Nasrudin's lawyer Boyamin Saiman today said the two hitmen were not professional killers, but were "public servants" (could mean they were soldiers or police or public order thugs or ?), who were deceived into conducting what they thought was a mission to defend the country. The two had been told that Nasrudin was an enemy of the state who must be eliminated.

Saiman said the two had previously worked as debt collectors. He said four days before the murder of Nasrudin, the two had used a government vehicle while on a debt collecting job.

Antasari made a show of kissing his wife at the press conference (which has just ended), to let us know he's a loyal husband and could not possibly have been screwing the caddie.

The four-hour delay of the press conference might have been because Antasari was trying to convince his wife, Ida Laksmiwati, to stand by him. Or because his advisers were scripting him to say nothing about the murder he instigated with some Golkar and police figures.

According to the word on the street: The murder of Nasrudin was not a crime of passion. Nasrudin apparently wanted KPK to expose corruption involving his rivals in the state-owned enterprises sector. This would have meant promotion for Nasrudin, who befriended KPK chief Antasari Azhar. It seems Nasrudin got Antasari to have sex with his caddie, Rani Juliani, and documented the tryst. He threatened to expose the affair unless KPK dealt with the corruption case involving his superiors. But Antasari could not deal with that case because the company involved had been giving embezzled funds to Golkar – and Antasari owed his position to Golkar. Thus Antasari conspired with former Golkar Central Java chapter head Sigid Haryo Wibisono (who also owns the Harian Merdeka newspaper) and a senior police figure to kill Nasrudin. Some reconnaissance men and hitmen were hired and the job was done.

The bit about Nasrudin wanting corruption exposed and using his caddie girl to blackmail Antasari sounds a bit too convoluted to be true. I wouldn't be posting this spurious libelous rubbish if there were some facts being reported by the local press. It could well be that Antasari has been set up by some powerful enemies (yet in setting him up, they also drop Golkar in the mess).

At today’s press conference at his house, Antasari played the victim. He said his wife Ida Laksmiwati and their kids were a source of strength for him in these difficult times. He also said he had started praying to Allah.

Eager to not talk about the murder, Antasari said corruption eradication must continue despite his suspension. He said he would continue to support efforts of the police and Attorney General’s Office to combat corruption. He categorically denied being involved in a love triangle with Rani and Nasrudin. He also denied being involved in a corruption case. “It’s all untrue.”

Laksmiwati said she trusted her husband. She dismissed the murder allegation against him as a form of terrorism. "Regarding the current news, I continue to believe to my husband. That’s only terrorism.” She said she had been accustomed to such “terrorism” since her childhood because her father had also been a “law enforcer” and the terrorism had increased since Antasari became KPK chief, so she was not surprised by the latest allegations.

Police haven’t been saying much today. There have been fears that the detained killers might be dealt with behind closed doors to prevent them from exposing the masterminds of the murder. One of the suspected killers, Henrycus (from Flores), was taken out of Jakarta Police headquarters by police investigators this afternoon. He was not handcuffed but was closely escorted by four policemen. Jakarta Police detention officer Aiptu Ali said he did not where the investigators were taking Henrycus (who did not have a lawyer). He said five other suspects in the case were still being detained at police headquarters.

Finally! The Jakarta Post sheds some light on the case:

Antasari: “I have been summoned as a witness”
Irawaty Wardany | The Jakarta Post | Sun, 05/03/2009

The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chairman Antasari Azhar has denied he has been named a suspect in the murder case of state enterprise director Nasrudin Zulkarnaen.

“I have received a warrant for questioning as a witness from the Jakarta Police precinct and I will fulfill the summons on Monday,” Antasari told a press conference at his residence in Giri Loka 2 residence in Tangerang, Banten on Sunday.

Nasrudin, the director of state firm PT Putra Rajawali Banjaran, died on March 15 from gunshot wounds he sustained in a drive-by shooting that took place a day earlier as he left the Modernland golf course in Tangerang.

The Attorney General’s Office (AGO) had previously announced Antasari a suspect in the murder case on Friday, replacing the police who should have made the call.

However, it was not clear what role Antasari allegedly played in the case or the motive behind the assassination.

Antasari said he could not comment about why he was being implicated in the case. “As a legal enforcer I respect the legal process, so I cannot comment on the substance of the case so far”.

And a cursory overview by Reuters:

Indonesia police to quiz anti-graft chief in murder case
Reuters
Sunday, 03 May 2009

Indonesia's anti-graft chief said he would make a statement to police on Monday after being named a suspect in a murder investigation and put on temporary leave.

Antasari Azhar, head of the Corruption Eradication Commission(KPK), on Sunday denied some reports circulating in local media about the case but he declined to comment when asked by reporters if he was involved in the killing of a businessman in March. One of his lawyers has said he was innocent.

The announcement on Friday by the attorney-general's office that Azhar was one of several suspects in the murder has shocked Indonesians and dealt a blow to the agency.

Azhar, making his first public comments since the announcement, said he had been summoned to police questioning on Monday as a witness and not as a suspect.

"My status remains as a witness as stated in the letter from the police," said Azhar, 56, speaking calmly outside his home in Tangerang, west of Jakarta, accompanied by a team of lawyers.

"Regarding the opinion and reports I strongly state that they're all not true," he said without elaborating.

The case revolves around the murder of Nasrudin Zulkarnaen, a director of state-owned pharmaceutical firm Putra Rajawali Banjaran. Zulkarnaen, who had been a witness in a corruption case investigated by the agency, was shot by two gunmen in March.

Several high-profile politicians and officials, including some from the attorney-general's office, have been charged and imprisoned as a result of the commission's investigations.

The agency has also made many enemies.

"Threats are in my daily diet. I'm not surprised at all at what's been reported. I still trust my husband. It's just another form of terrorising," Azhar's wife, Ida Laksmiwati, told reporters.

On Friday night, the KPK said Azhar's four deputy chairmen would take over his duties.

The KPK, the police and the attorney-general's office "should not slacken in our efforts and plans, they must move forward and commit to fighting corruption", Azhar said.

Nasrudin’s Murder a Test Case for Country
The Jakarta Globe | Editorial | May 3, 2009

In recent days, the fact that police called Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) chief Antasari Azhar as a witness in the March 14 gangland-style murder of Nasrudin Zulkarnaen has dominated the news.

Carried out with awful precision, and filled with the possibility of a love triangle and links to corruption cases and high-ranking officials, the murder itself was gruesome — and sensational. Add to that the name of a man as powerful as anticorruption czar Antasari and the killing of Nasrudin, a director of a state-owned enterprise and a KPK witness, has become a matter for rumor, fevered speculation and multiple theories about the murder. But this is not a parlor game; this is a highly serious matter for the country.

First, the fact that Nasrudin could be gunned down in broad daylight in what appeared to be a well-orchestrated shooting is chilling. Given his ties to the KPK and his status as a witness, the murder could frighten many potential anticorruption witnesses. That fact alone makes it vital that police get to the bottom of the shooting.

We can ill afford to allow our society to be perceived at home or abroad as lawless. We are all too familiar with the string of unsolved political murders in the Philippines. Those terrible incidents, going back decades and rarely solved, have hurt that country’s image and given it a reputation for being dangerous and unstable. Similarly, the recent shooting of a leading anti-Thaksin protest leader in Thailand, Sondhi Limthongkul, has raised the stakes in the ongoing political crisis there, compounding a sense that events may be spinning out of control. Here, a number of high-profile murders also remain unsolved.

It is too early to know what really happened in the case of Nasrudin. Even the circumstances surrounding the naming of Antasari have been filled with confusion. When his name first surfaced on Thursday as police were arresting nine suspects for the murder, it seemed incredible. Then the Attorney General’s Office added to the confusion on Friday by saying Antasari was a “suspect.” The police summons, however, clearly calls him a witness. Antasari has denied involvement and has been suspended from his duties pending the outcome of the investigation and legal proceedings.

This is as it should be. The work of the KPK, while occasionally flawed, is vital in investigating and prosecuting corruption. We can ill afford to have the entire body tarnished by the legal troubles of just one man.

The greater issue, however, is the perception that murder can go unpunished. The police are to be applauded for moving with deliberate speed on this high-profile case. Safety and security, after food and shelter, are the most basic of human needs. Indonesians deserve security from such heinous crimes. We must be free to go about our daily lives without fear.

The police and the judicial system are crucial to creating a climate of social peace, safety and security. This may be a test case for these values. No matter where it leads, the murder must be solved. If Antasari — or anyone else— is named as a suspect, they must be suspended from any government position and brought to trial swiftly.

Indonesia's anti-corruption boss named as suspect in 'love triangle' murder
The Sydney Morning Herald
Tom Allard Indonesia Correspondent, Jakarta
May 3, 2009

ANTASARI AZHAR, the head of Indonesia's powerful corruption watchdog, has been named as a suspect in the killing of a senior executive amid allegations of a love triangle gone wrong and a murder plot organised by a clique from Jakarta's elites.

Mr Azhar's lawyer has dismissed the notion his client masterminded the assassination of Nasrudin Zulkarnaen, describing it as a "grand scenario" by unnamed conspirators to destroy a graft-busting crime fighter.

The Corruption Eradication Commission, or KPK, is arguably the country's most respected institution, an independent body set up by the Government to tackle the endemic culture of graft. It has snared some prominent scalps along the way and bolstered the credentials of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono at home and abroad.

However, its pristine reputation was dented when the Attorney-General's spokesman, Jasman Panjaitan, declared on Friday that Mr Azhar was the suspected brains behind the murder of Mr Zulkarnaen, an executive with PT Putra Rajawali Banjara, a state-owned pharmaceuticals firm.

A travel ban has been imposed on Mr Azhar before his interrogation by police today.

Mr Zulkarnaen was shot in the head by a man on a motorcycle as he left a golf course south of Jakarta in his BMW on March 14. Two days later police reportedly found a text message on Mr Zulkarnaen's mobile phone from Mr Azhar saying, reportedly, "You know the risk."

Police were then alerted to Mr Zulkarnaen's involvement with a young woman named by Antara News agency as Rani Julianti. Mr Zulkarnaen's family and lawyers say Mr Azhar was infatuated with the woman, 22, said to be a golf caddy.

According to a family friend, Mr Zulkarnaen threatened to expose Mr Azhar's relationship with Ms Julianti to Jakarta's voracious gossip media, prompting the alleged threat to his life via SMS. A friend and golf partner of Mr Zulkarnaen, Jeffrey Lumempouw, said he was told of the message on the course just hours before the murder.

"The name of Antasari was in the text message," he told Indonesian media. But a lawyer for Mr Azhar, Juniver Girsang, denied his client had any relationship with Ms Julianti and said there was a conspiracy to besmirch Mr Azhar.

Among those caught by the KPK have been senior staff at the attorney-general's department. The eagerness of the Attorney-General to publicly name Mr Azhar before his interview with police has also raised suspicions.

In addition, associates said Mr Zulkarnaen was providing the KPK with detailed information about graft at his own company, raising the possibility that he was killed by colleagues about to be exposed, who then set up Mr Azhar.

Police have already arrested the alleged killer, reportedly an East Timorese who fought with the pro-Indonesian militia and was "skilled at shooting".

The rider of the motorcycle from which Mr Zulkarnaen was shot has also been detained, as has the alleged recruiter of the assassin, apparently a senior police officer from Jakarta.

Two other men, allegedly the financiers of the plot, have also been arrested. One is Sigit Haryo Wibisono, the owner of the newspaper Harian Merdeka.

"SHW is the man who promoted [Mr Azhar] to the KPK head position," said Boyamin Saimin, a friend of Mr Zulkarnaen who has been helping police with their inquiries. "He lobbied parliamentarians."

The Jakarta Globe has filled in some gaps. The former Jakarta district police chief with the initials W.W. arrested over the murder is former South Jakarta Police chief Willy Wiliardi.

And Rani Juliani has reportedly been taken into protective custody by police. According to detikcom, she is being held in a "secret location", more specifically, in an apartment.

"And Rani Juliani has reportedly been taken into protective custody by police. According to detikcom, she is being held in a "secret location", more specifically, in an apartment"

The police probably want to see what all the fuss is about ... No doubt she is charging 1 Juta a round

Also, arrest of J.E. leads to arrest of Sigid Haryo Wibisono, a businessman who is a former head of the Golkar Party's Central Java chapter.

Why is The Jakarta Post so reluctant to run these stories? Buried today's story on the bottom of page two.

ain't half obvious that they are burying the story. proof -- if any more was required -- of the vested interests that The Jakarta Post represents.

The Jakarta Post
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Jakarta Post Type Daily newspaper
Format Broadsheet
Owner PT Bina Media Tenggara
Editor Endy M. Bayuni
Founded 1983
Headquarters Jakarta, Indonesia
Website www.thejakartapost.com

The Jakarta Post is a daily English language newspaper in Indonesia. With an average circulation of around 50,000 copies[citation needed], it is the largest English language newspaper in Indonesia. The paper is owned by PT Bina Media Tenggara, and the head office is in the nation's capital, Jakarta. The newspaper was launched on 25 April 1983.

The Jakarta Post is a small but influential newspaper oriented towards local English-speaking expatriates and the diplomatic community.[citation needed]

The newspaper is owned by a consortium of competing Indonesian-language newspaper companies. Shareholders include Gramedia (owners of Kompas, by far Indonesia's biggest newspaper), Tempo, Suara Karya (a newspaper with close links with the former governing Golkar Party) and Sinar Harapan. Twenty percent of equity is now provided as a collective share for all non-foreign employees of the newspaper.

The history of the Post dates back to a conversation in mid-1982, between then-minister for information Ali Moertopo and Mr. Jusuf Wanandi, who represented the government-backed Golkar newspaper Suara Karya. Minister Moertopo suggested the possibility of publishing an English-language newspaper that would be able to provide an Indonesian perspective to counter what he perceived to be "highly unbalanced" Western-dominated news and views.
