A1GP Returns to Indonesia

World-Class Drivers to Race the Streets of Lippo Village

JAKARTA, 28 August 2008 – Indonesian racing fans can rejoice once more as A1GP, the World Cup of Motorsport, returns to Indonesia early next year. The Indonesian A1GP race is set to be hosted in the township of Lippo Village (previously named Lippo Karawaci) as a street circuit. This means that from the weekend of the 6th to 8th of February 2009, the downtown streets of Lippo Village will be transformed into a motorsport arena where drivers from around the world will be competing for the pride of their nations in the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport.

Indonesia is also making history, as it is the first time the nation has seen a street race of this scale, making Lippo Village a member of an exclusive list of famous street circuits around the world such as Surfers Paradise, Durban, Valencia, Monaco, Melbourne, and Singapore. “This is a very exciting occasion not just for Lippo Village, but also Indonesia as a whole,” said Mr. Gordon Benton, Senior Executive from PT. Lippo Karawaci Tbk. “Lippo wanted to bring a top international event to Indonesia like the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport, and we are working very closely with the Ikatan Motor Indonesia (IMI), the Ministry of Youth & Sport and rights holder Carbon Worldwide to make this event the pinnacle stop on the A1GP calendar for years to come.”

As host venue, Lippo Village will be modifying parts of the town near the famous Pelita Harapan University (UPH) in order to allow easy transformation into an FIA-certified street circuit during race weekend. Working with world renowned track designers Tilke Gmbh, the street circuit will include public grandstands, exhibition and hospitality areas, a pit complex, and mall area that will be erected during the race week. “The track designers have conducted the initial site visit, and are currently completing the final design. We intend for the track to be of the highest quality and through good planning, offer minimal disruption to our residents and commercial enterprises,” said Mr. Gordon Benton.

This event will be broadcasted to over 700 million households within and beyond Indonesia and there will be an extensive build-up and marketing campaign to attract visitors to the event. There are also a number of activities around the race which also includes a charity event involving A1GP and Indonesian personalities. “We are bringing the race to the people. The township of Lippo Village already has a variety of quality facilities and the design of the event will complement the township, offering a unique experience to the public. It’s not just the race, but a great day out,” said Mr. Keld Kristiansen, Executive Chairman of Carbon Worldwide.

Bapak Agum Gumelar, Commissioner of PT Lippo Karawaci Tbk said, “We at Lippo Corporation believe that the significant investment made in the race and circuit itself will benefit the nation in the years to come. Apart from the good publicity of showcasing Indonesia to the world, as we have seen in other cities with street circuits, a race like this will represent a boost to the local businesses from the influx of local and overseas visitors.”

Street races present a good opportunity to promote motorsport to a new audience who have traditionally not been motorsport fans. The A1GP Indonesia at Lippo Village will add a different dimension to the already vibrant local motorsport scene and complement the other races that are on the IMI motorsport calendar.

With Indonesia also fielding a team in the World Cup of Motorsport, the A1GP Indonesia will offer A1 Team Indonesia the chance to once again race in front of their home fans.
