Padangbai is a lovely bay in bali with 2 hidden beaches, the blue lagoon and the less-accessible bias tegul. The latter is in the process of having a huge Korean-owned resort, Chateau de Bali (Shat on Bali) built right upon it. Here are some photos of the construction progress of the monstrous chateau.

It will remain a public beach albeit with access to it via a giant road through the resort and presumably swarming with package tourists. The little beach warungs serving cheap and tasty food have gone, as have most of the coconut palm trees, resulting in little shade on the beach now.

On the other hand, it will hopefully bring in added tourist revenue, and provide employment opportunities, to the local community, who are possibly less concerned with the western concept of aesthetics and a pristine beach than others.

the balinese will wake up from their slovenly slumbers one day to discover they have the status of aboriginals in australia.

these projects provide employment for javanese, more than balinese, who generally reflect the rentier mentality of folk who have had it too easy for too long.

When are foreigners going to stop swallowing the line that the only people who make money on Bali are the Javanese. Yeah, the Balinese have been saying that for the 35 years I've been visiting, but it's bullshit. Go to Java if you want to see grinding poverty. Bali is by far the richest province in Indonesia. And this fugly resort is Korean owned! Sure Javanese big business is in Bali, along with Balinese, American, Swiss, Japanese - you name it - but the real problem for many Balinese is European property speculators, oh sorry, I mean spiritual villa-owning expats in tune with the environment and the Balinese people. They're driving land prices through the roof - great for Balinese land owners - crap for everyone else on Bali. Soon the rice farmers will be gone and everyone will be forced into indentured slavery to bules, sorry, I mean they will all have rewarding English-speaking jobs in the tourist/service industry.
