Padangbai is a lovely bay in bali with 2 hidden beaches, the blue lagoon and the less-accessible bias tegul. The latter is in the process of having a huge Korean-owned resort, Chateau de Bali (Shat on Bali) built right upon it. Here are some photos of the construction progress of the monstrous chateau.
It will remain a public beach albeit with access to it via a giant road through the resort and presumably swarming with package tourists. The little beach warungs serving cheap and tasty food have gone, as have most of the coconut palm trees, resulting in little shade on the beach now.
On the other hand, it will hopefully bring in added tourist revenue, and provide employment opportunities, to the local community, who are possibly less concerned with the western concept of aesthetics and a pristine beach than others.

the balinese will wake up from their slovenly slumbers one day to discover they have the status of aboriginals in australia.
these projects provide employment for javanese, more than balinese, who generally reflect the rentier mentality of folk who have had it too easy for too long.

screwvenir anything that you keep (whether stolen or given to you) from someone's house after you've slept with them. Laura didn't really like doing it with Chip so much, but she did nab a copy of Time Magazine with Mick Jagger on it from his house as a screwvenir.
