JAKARTA, Aug. 26 -- Strong quake measuring 6.6 Richter scale struck western part of Java Island of Indonesia on Tuesday, potential for tsunami, but no report of damage or casualty, meteorology and disaster management agencies said here.

In western and southern parts of Lampung province of Sumatra Island, where the intensity of the quake was felt, the strongest, there were no report of building damages or casualty, an official of National Disaster Management Agency named only Zainy said.

"There was no report of casualty or damages at Lampung," she told Xinhua.

The quake struck at 10:07 Jakarta time (0310 GMT) with the epicentre at 125 kilometers northwest of Ujungkulon of West Java and at 20 kilometers under sea bed, the agency said.

All I noticed about it is that one of the doors in the office started opening and closing slowly on it's own, at which point half the people are looking at it like "huh, odd" and the other half's like "huh, earthquake".

I was in the former group :P

A: What was that?
B: It was an earthquake.
A: OH MY GOD! WE'RE ALL GOING TO DIE!
B: ?

I know I mentioned this already, but it winds me up. I actually would like to be involved in a proper tarmac twister, so I can shout at these people without feeling like a cnut.

It's fun really if the roof doesn't fall in, when I was lucky enough to enjoy a nice 6-something quake in Aceh NYE 2004, I shat myself and ran around like the proverbial chook with its head cut off, tearing the phone I was talking into out of the socket. Everyone around me was shouting "ya allaaaah" and trampling over one another. How we all laughed afterwards. Lovely. Then it happened again after midnight, and that time I got stomped on too in the darkness, although fortunately by this time we were all sleeping outside. Should combine this post with the groping news, perfect opportunity for that.

Yes I felt a tremor in Padang three weeks ago; whilst I was in a Warnet catching up with JakChat strangely enough. Everyone bolted for the door and old muggins here had to wait for the stampede to clear. Luckily the building didn't collapse however the general decaying ambience of Padang suggested that it may have been a close thing.

Plaza BBD, 9th floor smile It dampens most of it down nicely, some people up on the 30th did come stampeding down the emergency stairs doing the whole "oh ${DEITY} we're all gonna die" thing.

Strangely enough they don't seem to realise that if you are on or near the top floor of a sufficiently decripit office building, if there is a truly bigassed quake, chances of you making it downstairs and outside before the whole thing comes crashing down on your head are very close to 0%.

Same in Taman Rasuna, whenever there's a quake big enough to shake the building they'll start ordering people to go outside "for their own safety". Referring back to the chances above, the chances of people already outside getting a big chunk of concrete lovingly placed in their necks by gravity: close to 100%.

So yeah uh, ... yeah... bit offtopic but ok.

"I never felt a thing."

I bet your wife tells you that often.
