Thanks Chewwy, I'll keep that in mind. I'll be sitting on roughly 1.5 grand for my first two months of being there, so i'll have to find a job within the first week.
So that'll help.

Fastnet is good for Internet connectivity -- they do seem to be the only company in Indonesia so far who understand how to run an ISP and what "fast connection" really means.
The drawback is that they're still, uh, very "indonesian" (maintenance is not announced and can occur at any given time, usually around noon or 7pm-10pm), and their helpdesk isn't much use at all.
But, for the price you pay, you do get a fast connection without too much downtime.
I think they still have a combo package deal running where if you get the TV package as well you'll get a discount on both internet and TV for the first few months.
So yeah, if you can deal with a "broken" helpdesk and relatively crappy customer service, but do want a fast connection, Fastnet is the place to go.

Richard, trust me on one thing, next time you want to talk down to me be prepared to back it up with more than just your religious bullshit mumbojumbo If you would have taken the time to find out, I'm from the Netherlands, where one is used to getting more out of a helpdesk than just an "I dunno". I don't even particularly care about the fact the helpdesk gives me an "I dunno", but the miles of excuses and bullshit before someone will finally get to the point and tell me that yes, they broke it, and yes it's being fixed. Perhaps that Indonesian (or most likely Javanese) culture at work, but if people keep doing that, things around this country will never make a change for the better. So sure, you keep preaching about how one should acclimatize so this country can stay halfcocked. Make no effort to improve things, great job Richard. Now, please, quit replying to my posts, don't even think about it anymore -- in the end I'm only going to have to give you the worst verbal smackdown of your life, and I can't guarantee you'll get out of that with all your sanity intact.

Unfortunately I think it's game called on account of complete cowardice on RC's part You are from Haarlem, a place which lends its name to one of the most notorious areas of New York City. You come from Amsterdam, a den of vice where the main industries are drugs and prostitution. You come from Den Haag which presumes to call itself the seat of International justice while fiends like Slobodan Milosovic mock it and and out-of-touch whimpering liberals call for the trial of the President of the U.S.A. Did you think those credentials of your origin were going to impress me Mr Cat. Was this the 'verbal smackdown' you were threatening which would 'shake my sanity' ?? Oh my, how much you have to learn. For a start let me tell you that a man of faith, like myself, is not at all intimidated by worldly threats. I answer only, ONLY, to the Lord. Let me tell you about where i come from Sir. And let me tell you about cowardice. When the first pioneers arrived to settle Minnesota in the late 1600s, they had not only the belligerent indigenous population but also one of the most hostile climates in the world to deal with. We survived droughts, blizzards, a civil war, depressions and in later years the scourge of liberal politics and yet have forged a prosperous and Godly land. Mr Cat, you keep your low-lying, low-standing, liberal/sinful homeland. You keep haranguing your long suffering girlfriend to make complaint calls to anonymous helpline staff. And Mr Cat, you keep calling me a coward.

Milwaukee has also certainly had its share of visitors. The French missionaries and explorers began visiting there in the late 16th century.

I can tell you don't get out much. The borough of Harlem got it's name when the Dutch founded New Amsterdam (later New York, we lost it in some shady deal for Surinam). So the town of Haarlem does not lend it's name to anything. You (the American populace I'm afraid) caused the bad name of Harlem all by yourself. Strange, this fingerpointing. What ever happened to turning the other cheek? I wouldn't have expected something so banal from a pious person like you Richard? The thing with Den Haag is that Slobodan Milocevic, and let's not forget the newest contender Radovan Karadzic, are getting their trials. Unfortunately for us all even war criminals have the right to a fair trial. And lately I haven't heard anything coming out of our government -or- the International Court about a trial for the President of the USA. I'll admit I'll be the first one to do a little dance of joy when G.W. gets sent packing, but that shouldn't concern you too much, now should it? Did you think those credentials of your origin were going to impress me Mr Cat. Was this the 'verbal smackdown' you were threatening which would 'shake my sanity' ?? Oh my, how much you have to learn. For a start let me tell you that a man of faith, like myself, is not at all intimidated by worldly threats. I answer only, ONLY, to the Lord.
Besides being a hypocrit, you also seem to be demented. Did I say that the smackdown was going to consist of a single post? No, I didn't. We're just getting warmed up, so please, get comfortable. Now as to your Lord, who you answer to, and all that. Since God has a plan for all of us, and I assume you also believe that God is infallible, those liberals supposedly crying for the trial of the President of the USA? That's all God's plan -- after all, He -is- the one in control, according to your faith. Care to explain then why you are criticising your own Lord? Let me tell you about where i come from Sir. And let me tell you about cowardice. When the first pioneers arrived to settle Minnesota in the late 1600s, they had not only the belligerent indigenous population but also one of the most hostile climates in the world to deal with.
Richard, I do believe you are, again, contradicting your own faith here. Did not the Bible say in 17:26 "And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;" Those belligerent people? Yeah, they're your equals. Great way to show that besides being a biblethumper you are also a racist. Bravo Sir, well played! We survived droughts, blizzards, a civil war, depressions and in later years the scourge of liberal politics and yet have forged a prosperous and Godly land.
You, my kind Sir, did not survive, or forge anything. You are merely riding on the coattails of your forefathers. They are the ones who did all the work, you are just sitting in your ivory tower proclaiming that the Lord is awesome, and at the same time by doing that, you are going against what's in the Bible. Again, bravo Sir, well played. Mr Cat, you keep your low-lying, low-standing, liberal/sinful homeland. You keep haranguing your long suffering girlfriend to make complaint calls to anonymous helpline staff. And Mr Cat, you keep calling me a coward.
You really must be a very lonely person, I'm not haranguing my girlfriend into doing anything, I'm actually the one who tells her to not get angry at the people she is talking to -- then again, I'm sure that in your cross-wired mind interracial relationships are bad? I'll let you in on a little secret too, we're both atheists -- I used to be a catholic, until I figured out that organised religion is a mere excuse of those fallible humans to pillage and plunder. See, if God is all-knowing and all-powerful, he'd know if you have faith in Him, you don't need to go to a church to prove it. So, hey, Richard... tell me something. Do you own any CD's? any DVD's? Ever own a Walkman?

Milwaukee has also certainly had its share of visitors. The French missionaries and explorers began visiting there in the late 16th century. Mr Yeung, as a knowledgeable, worldly man (unlike Mssrs Cat and Vulgar say), I assume your repeated references to Milwaukee are intentionally incorrect. A part of your peculiar brand of humor i would guess. Of course, Milwaukee is in the great state of Wisconsin, not my home state of Minnesota (although we are neighbors). As for Mr Cat, a little nugget from a different forum. "At least Amsterdam has a bigger caucasian population than London" And to think he has the temerity to call me racist. I'll have you know that I campaigned for an enlargement of the South Lakota reservation area (in western Minnesota) as well as the granting of gambling rights and reductions in alcohol taxes for these people in the early 90s (against conventional thinking at the time). I'm also proud to have campaigned against an affirmative action policy in our county whereby underprivileged children (read non-white) would have the bar set lower for entrance into state universities. Naturally, such a policy would breed laziness and a lack of aspiration amongst these people, thereby working against them in the long run. Richard

Here we go again, another prejucided presumptious blown up sack of hot air. 1: It's "Pim Fortuijn" - get it right, or don't play ball. 2: I never said I didn't speak Bahasa Indonesia at all, I speak enough to get by in a daily setting, not enough to explain a technical problem that -- in all probability, would give you a headache -- to someone who's level of understanding about things like that is hovering around the 0.5% mark, like any other helpdesk tech in every other country I've been to so far. Public forum dough head and until Chubby UK gets his wish fulfilled and has me banned then I for one will continue to torment you because I think you're worth it.
You should try harder, the useless tripe you dribble out like diarrhea is amusing, far from tormenting. Might I suggest you drop the old rhetoric you've been relying on these past years to attempt (amusingly so) to prove you're right and come up with something a slight bit more interesting? Go on RC, tell him who you are. I've know who he is from day 2, give or take. Doesn't mean I can't play along with the game, now does it? As for you dear Captain Third Person, try harder next time okay? Right now your level of "flaming" is about up to what a 12 year old could dish out. I expect much better, don't disappoint me now you hear?

Oddly, i seem to find myself allied to Mr Mainwaring in this little debate on values with Mr Cat. I can assure you, this is not a position i feel wholly comfortable with. I had taken your 'not flaming' as a concession Mr Cat (something which is inevitable after all), but it seems you have changed your mind. Rather indictaive of most of your arguments i would say. You're not quite sure where you stand. As for this isssue of my identity. I play the game straight Mr Cat. The Lord teaches that we should embrace our adversaries and ,as such, you are always more than welcome to look me up should you find yourself in the Bukit Sentul area. Richard

I've know who he is from day 2 Come now, get it right or don't play ball. I never said I didn't speak Bahasa Indonesia at all, I speak enough to get by in a daily setting Ah yes, I see. "Mau satu bir dingin sekali" in all probability, would give you a headache - well there, we nearly agree, you don't quite have the stamina or determination to give me a headache, but you are certainly a trier. Who is he then?

I've know who he is from day 2 Come now, get it right or don't play ball. There's a difference between not bothering checking on the proper name of a person and making a typo. But then again if playing grammar nazi makes you feel good I suggest you go for it. I never said I didn't speak Bahasa Indonesia at all, I speak enough to get by in a daily setting Ah yes, I see. "Mau satu bir dingin sekali" Indeed. Now let's see, when you arrived in this country, you obviously were fluent at the lingo, could pontificate at great length about the political climate, and knew exactly what you were doing, right? in all probability, would give you a headache - well there, we nearly agree, you don't quite have the stamina or determination to give me a headache, but you are certainly a trier. Oh bravo, well played Sir! Taking a statement completely out of context to twist it into something that suits you, a most excellent technique. Guess I'll assume you're a complete IT-illiterate then. Seeing as I'm not sure -everyone- knows who he is, I prefer not to say, it'd kinda ruin his fun don't you think?

Interesting discussion. Entertaining. As for the topic: While not knowing Fastnet, I have good experience using Indosat's wireless 3.5G network: http://www.indosat.com/Indosat_3.5G_BroadbandI pay 550k a month (data limit 3 GB), and the modem was free. Download speed is usually around 600 kbit/s, and upload speed 350 kbit/s. With a laptop and a 3.5G modem, this solution is king!

Yes, speedy sucks.
It's great to just bring my notebook anywhere and get connected. For example, to sit in a cafe in Jogja and surf internet at 800 kbit/s. Work, and looking at girls passing by... :-) I just measured the speed against a machine in Europe.
