i think danielle made a mistake by not attempting to import all the old messages into the new forum. place now looks too "new".

if digitaldevelopment.com would let me in, i could certainly shake out the database for worthwhile info.

Most likely since it shows up with it's own useragent, and whilst in mirroring mode it tends to be not-so-nice on requests (i.e. no delay inbetween requests, etc.)

If you ever need to do it again, man wget (can't remember the option) to find the option to set a custom user agent, rip some IE7 user agent out of the server logs, and use that.

The better option being to just write some Perl, grab WWW::Mechanize or LWP::UserAgent (whatever flavor you prefer) and do it that way since you can easily spoof a couple user agents and do some random delays inbetween requests.

Makes it hard to find unless they get clued in on the requests all coming from a single IP.

There's always the google cache and the wayback machine if there was anything special you were after. And if you had far too much time to waste.

wayback won't be much use. i already thought about google cache, but would have to utilise a lot of time doing a program for it, remembering there are 70,000 or so messages.

perhaps madcat has the time and inclination.

"site:expatforum.digitaldevelopment.com" returns 40,100 results; but will have to be quick before google deletes them from it's database.

Well no-one's going to be able to blackmail me from postings on the old expat site. I found it so irritating and full of people wondering how much they should pay their pembantu, I couldn't stand more than a few visits, a few years ago, never took a second glance. Maybe I'll try and stomach the new one.
