Govt. prepares weekend industry schedule

The government will introduce regulations requiring industries to work a maximum of two days per month at weekends in order to spread peak power loads, Energy and Resources Minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro and Industry Minister Fahmi Idris said Friday, Kompas reported.

The two ministers said the decision on the required shift in working days had been made following discussions with the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin), related government departments and state power utility PT PLN. Yusigantoro said on an average working day, PLN’s supply capacity had now fallen behind demand by around 600 MW.

Industry associations continued to complain of the lack of clarity in government plans. Anton Supit, secretary general of the Indonesian Employers Association (Apindo), said overseas buyers were also complaining.

“It would be reasonable if the only people making a fuss were domestic business operators, but overseas buyers are also panicking because Indonesia’s situation is so uncertain,” he said.
