Did I say JJ was a terrible place? Must've been drunk. I actually have some very fond memories of Jalan Jaksa, when I first came to Jakarta stayed in the Ibis Hotel on Jl. Wahid Asyim.
JJ is only 2 mins away on the opposite side from Ibis, turn left.
Then a few years later worked around the corner from JJ, in B Mentara building in Kebon Sirih and would go there for lunch (P's Place now closed) they did a good fish n chips.
Alis Bar was also a place I'd go for beer... Anyone know if the Welshman still runs that place? Think his name was Peter.

I have an indonesian girlfriend (normal friends as hang out together, nothing more) She only knew about jalan jaksa from television. I invited her to come over and have a drink together in one of the bars. She didnt really want to, but after some persuation she agreed to take a look. She barely dared to strawl the road (covering her face), but by no means she wanted to eat something in one of the restaurants. (I just could get her to eat something at the kaki lima) It seemed to me she was ashamed to be there???
She told me later jaksa has a very bad name amongst 'decent' jakartans and her family would not accept if she would be seen there.
Does jaksa really have such a bad name?? I find it the most pleasant and safe street in jakarta, why all this fuzz?? Do you have similar experiences? I pass by that street couple of times, but havent tried to stop by..it's just another tourists corner with cafes, cheap hotels, foreign tourists, etc. Drug dealers, and whores can be found anywhere else that might even worse. Not my kind of place to hang out though, i prefer sport club, the malls, and ancol :p

(and for pappa's curry!) When you get to Jaksa, be sure to visit Romance and also Papa Cafe and ask to meet Rex T. Marcus. He's the definite highlight of any trip to the 'dark street'.
