Govt blacks out Astro`s broadcast


Jakarta (Antara News) - The Communication and Information Ministry on Friday blacked out pay-television provider Astro`s broadcast after it had failed to meet its obligations.

"True, (we have blacked out its broadcast) because Astro has not met some of its obligations," Freddy Tulung, the ministry`s acting director general of communication and information dissemination facilities, said.

Astro still had to meet the obligation to pay fees on the right to use frequency, among others, he said.

"The blackout has nothing to do with the question of frequency nor reciprocal satellite. The two problems have already been resolved," he said.

The government would allow Astro to resume its broadcast after PT Direct Vision which operates the pay-television provider had met all its obligations, he said.

"If Astro has fulfilled the obligations by next Monday, it can directly resume its broadcast," he said.

Meanwhile, Halim Mahfudz, the company`s vice president for corporate affairs, was not available for comment on the matter. (*)

Hamim wasnt available ... nore is Astro Call centres customer service!!! How the hell does this sort of thing happen without any prior warning? You would have thought if the government came out 1 month before to tell the media this would happen then the out cry from subscribes would have been enough to get Astro back in line (if they were out of line in the first place)

Call me a cynic but this could be indovision etc using government connections to do this because our malaysians friends secured exclusive rights to the EPL

There has to be something else going on. I can't believe that a company the size of Astro would fail to pay a bill.

Btw, astro's broadcast is spot on. Way better than Indovision which works 25% of the time here in Sumut.
